Magic Johnson backs Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine—are they the heroes Inglewood needs right now?

How many 90s kids would’ve loved to brag they’ve been to the ‘School of Dre.’ Now a bunch of Inglewood kids are going to make us really jealous. But instead of a detailed analysis of who NWA is dissing, these kids get something better. At a time when the school systems are in dire straits, Dr Dre is bringing quality education to young minds. After two years of effort, the rap mogul opened the doors of his new school. Someone who’s thrilled by his accomplishment is his old friend, Magic Johnson. In typical Magic fashion, he penned a heartwarming message for Dr Dre and his collaborator.

Magic celebrated the opening of the Iovine and Young Center IDTE Magnet School on his Instagram Stories as well as X, writing, “I’m so grateful and excited that Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are providing the community’s children with the chance to receive a quality education! Their new Iovine and Young Center IDTE Magnet school is super important, especially since many schools in Inglewood have closed. Congratulations to them both!”

After Interscope Records and Beat Electronics, Andre “Dr. Dre” Young and his longtime business partner, Jimmy Iovine, pulled one of their best collaborations yet. They partnered with the Inglewood Unified School District to open a new high school after the administration had to close five schools this year. One of the shuttered schools was a high school. But thanks to the music titans, the county found a way to help local students who were displaced.

But the school closures didn’t drive their decision. Iovine explained that it was a long time coming. “Two years ago, @drdre and I introduced a new type of high school curriculum to the #LosAngeles community. This week, students at the #IovineandYoungCenter IDTE Magnet start the new school year. Welcome back to the IYC. #education,” he wrote on social media at the school opening. Magic would reshare his post.

The Iovine and Young Education Group have opened two schools before, in Atlanta and in South Los Angeles. The Inglewood school will start with only 9th grade and 240 students now, gradually adding a new grade with each school year. For Magic’s old friends, it’s not a standard school.

Have an interesting take?

The Lakers legend is a passionate education advocate as he is a health activist. He’s constantly done his part to uplift at-risk kids, especially in his native Michigan. The billionaire athlete is happier to support more educators like Dre and Iovine.

They’re bringing innovation to education through the Iovine and Young Education Group. The curriculum is designed to encourage student leadership, team-based learning, collaborate with people in different disciplines, and diversifying their career options. This model has seen positive feedback at the other schools and presents a positive picture for Inglewood too.

Magic has hung around Interscope since the Showtime era and even joined Dr Dre on tour. So it’s not new for him to take pride in what his friends are doing. But this is a cause very close to him and he’s grateful for all Dre is doing for these young minds.
