Should Allen Iverson's Reebok earnings go to his ex-wife after all these years? Fair or foul?

Life has been anything but predictable for Allen Iverson. Little did he know he’d one day blow through nearly $200 million NBA earnings, coming to the verge of being broke. And little did he know, he’d one day be parting ways with his high school sweetheart, Tawanna Turner.

Yes, the former NBA star and his ex-wife knew each other from the time they were in high school. As per the reports, the two had different personalities. But, it seems the love somehow found its way with 5 kids and marriage along the way. Only for it to end with a divorce in 2013, costing AI heavily on his personal and financial life.

How much did Allen Iverson agree upon in his divorce settlement?

While Tawanna had first filed for a divorce in 2009, the real legal battle started in 2011. And this time around, she was in no mood to back down from her stand. The outcome of it? Legal proceedings continued for a span of nearly 2-years, only for the couple to reach a settlement outside of the court in 2013. The former Philadelphia 76ers star’s wife herself informed the court about the agreed-upon financial settlement. As per the reports that emerged back in 2013, AI had agreed to pay a large lump sum of $3 million to Tawanna.

Apart from this, the 11x All-Star also reportedly agreed upon forking multiple other assets along with child support for all of their five kids. Tiaura, Allen Iverson II, Dream Alijha, Isaiah Rahsaan, and Messiah Lauren. However, what might have hurt during the settlement was the agreement to share a percentage of his Reebok endorsement deal checks. The fans who have kept up with the post-retirement life of Iverson would know that Reebok came as a savior in his life when he was on the verge of being broke.

Under the lifetime deal with the brand, Al would continue to receive the annual payment of $800k and a $32 million trust fund, which he will receive upon turning 55. However, some reports that emerged in 2024 suggested that he may not get the complete amount when the time comes. Yes, if the reports are to be believed, the 11x All-Star may have to share this trust fund amount as well with his wife. But why this fund amount, though, you ask?

Let’s have a look at the revelation made by Black Sports Online’s Robert Littal to better understand the scenario. While speaking about Allen Iverson’s unauthorized biography, Not a Game, Littal stated the first time Tawanna had filed for divorce in 2009, Al wanted to win her back at any cost. In this desperate attempt to save his failing marriage, Al agreed to a post-nuptial agreement. Under the agreement, the ex-76ers star had pledged to give up all his assets, including the $32 million trust fund on failing to keep up with provisions of the agreement.

Should Allen Iverson's Reebok earnings go to his ex-wife after all these years? Fair or foul?

Have an interesting take?

The reported prohibited actions in the agreement were infidelity, physical or verbal abuse, failure to keep up with marriage counseling, or his therapy sessions about drinking and gambling issues. Apart from this, Al could never gamble again, had to be home by midnight, no purchase over $5k without discussion. It’s clear that Iverson failed to keep up with some of the long list of provisions. But, how did the first sparks of separation emerge between the couple that knew each other from high school days?

What led to the demise of Iverson’s relationship with his wife?

The couple tied the knot in 2001 after 10 years of dating and welcoming two children into this world. But, it did not long for the problems to emerge between the two after the marriage. In fact, some reports suggest tensions started surfacing after the first year of the marriage itself. There is even an infamous story of the time Allen Iverson kicked his wife out of his own house in a fit of anger. At least, this is what the allegations were back then.

In fact, they were even more serious. As per the allegations, once kicking his wife out of the house, he could not stay without searching for her, only to find her at her relative’s place. Denied the entry, the 11x All-Star allegedly barged in with a g*n in possession. However, Al later denied every single one of these allegations. He stated that a simple lover’s spat was blown out of proportion. It’s clear that the issues had started to emerge between the couple.

But things took a turn for the worse after infidelity allegations emerged against Al. And thus, Tawanna filed for divorce for the first time in 2009, which the ex-76ers star somehow prevented. But, even after actually splitting up in 2013, it is said that the couple reconciled after some time. Some media outlets even speculate the possibility that the two re-married each other. While there is no concrete evidence on this, what we have is the info that the two managed a cordial co-parenting atmosphere for their kids.

In fact, Iverson even mentioned Turner in his Hall of Fame speech in 2016. “This is one of those last-but-not-least things. My number one person in the world, Tawanna Iverson… Twenty-four years. Ups. Downs. But real love… Thank you… for loving me the way you do. And caring about what type of person I am and what type of person that I need to be to set an example for our babies,” he said. Given the amount of love he has had for Turner, it won’t be a surprise if Allen gladly agrees to give up a share of Reebok’s $32 million trust fund.
