Gabrielle Union’s appearance on Nina Westbrook’s podcast was introspective on many levels. NBA icon Dwyane Wade’s wife got personal about her career, marriage, personal growth, and even her culture with the host. Among the many social causes she takes a stand for, Union and her family also uplift the African-American community. Through this interview, she revealed that she’s working on shedding a cultural cycle she’s fallen into and became an inspiration for others to do the same.
The Bring It On star had previously brought up “trauma bonds” when going back to her ancestral roots. She continues the discussion and how she’s learning to come out of the box black people were restrained to on The Relationship Chronicles with Nina Westbrook.

Westbrook asked Union about working through emotions that could arise when “you know two plus two has to equal four but it can’t equal three.” To summarize, Westbrook asked what Union does when our environment says something makes sense only a certain way. D-Wade’s wife said those emotions were a challenge, stating, “I’m definitely not hitting it out of the park there at all.”
The challenge for her is “Unlearning or releasing myself from or just eventually hopefully cutting the trauma bonds.” Union had brought up the subject of “trauma bonds” in previous interviews. She used it in the context of a continuing chain of trauma that she and many others may carry in life.
“My great-grandparents poured into my grandparents who poured into my parents who poured into us and I just adopted [it],” she told Westbrook. Not long ago, she expressed her wish to break those traumatic shackles. She now says that she’s working towards it.

Gabrielle Union’s personal growth journey
Earlier this year, the multi-hyphenate star traveled to Ghana where she got emotional about her ancestry. “This is my superhero origin story right here,” she broke down. Union is a survivor of assault and relied on years of therapy for her mental health. Her journey to Africa gave her a broad picture of generational trauma and how many of her ancestors have overcome it, too.
