Devin Harris may not have had an exceptional career, but only 24 players of his height or shorter ever played more games than him. Considering the number of players in league history, the number may seem surprising. But this is what the recent episode of ‘ Forgotten Seasons’ revealed. Appearing on the show, the ex-Dallas Mavericks star detailed what it takes to survive this long in the league.

While being a good teammate so that people want you around and discipline are two surface requirements, there is more depth to it. “Taking care of your body, doing the things to make sure that you last. But I think the biggest thing is the ability to adjust, knowing where you are in your career and knowing how to get the most out of that,” Harris said, via Forgotten Seasons.

He further mentioned how a lot of players go from a starter to switching to being a bench player. One of the prime examples of this is Jamal Crawford. After playing almost half his career as a starter, Crawford later transformed the role of a bench player itself. Despite coming off the bench, he maintained a decent play-time and stats for himself, playing for two decades.

This was something Devin Harris himself did to last 15 seasons in the league. “I’ve been on a team where I’ve been an All-Star. I’ve been on a team where I’ve been a number one, number one option…Also been on a team where I’ve been the 10th guy and the 11th guy. And those roles don’t look the same. So being able to adjust to that role and maximizing that, I think, is the real key,” he stated on the show. Now, even after his NBA career has ended, the former Mavs star is still adapting to new roles.

The former Mavs star’s NBA career ended in 2019. Playing 15 seasons in the league, he averaged 10.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. Considering his stats always stayed average in the league, it’s clear he was changing himself as per the league’s requirement.

And now he has evolved into a different role as per his career requirement at this stage of life. The former NBA star has now entered into the media industry, and presently he is working at Bally Sports Southwest as an analyst, covering the Mavericks.

“I didn’t go to school for this…I didn’t do any training for this. This is all learning on the fly. It’s coming along,” he stated, as per Mavs.com. And although Harris stated this not being an easy job, he now seems to be enjoying it as it keeps him close to the game, while also teaching him how the business works.
