Magic Johnson's NFL venture lags behind—Is it a smart investment or a financial misstep?

I’m a guy who wants more. I’ve always wanted more. I have 14 world championship rings and I [want] a Super Bowl ring. And so how can I help them achieve that?” Magic Johnson gave an emphatic statement when he joined the owner’s group to purchase the NFL side. The investment group is led by Wall Street titan Josh Harris, defense billionaire Mitchell Rails, Harris’ longtime business partner David Blitzer, and the Los Angeles Lakers icon.

The Washington Commanders‘ sale at $6.05 Billion, is considered the biggest ever for a sports franchise. They surpassed the previous record of the Denver Broncos of $4.65 Billion which was set a year before the Commanders’ sale. Going into the second season, the team would like to improve their 4-13 record and finish last in the NFC East. But the team suffered a loss in a preseason game against the New York Jets.

The Jets won the game 17-20 and would be hoping that the second season of esteemed QB Aaron Rodgers brings them luck. Both teams don’t have a good record on the field recently, but off the field, both franchises are in the top 10 list for Most Valuable Franchise. As per Kurt Badenhausen of Sportico, the Dallas Cowboys became the first franchise to cross the $10B mark. Magic Johnson co-owned Commanders round off the list at 10th with $6.3 Billion.

Compared with last year’s list, the team had a 4% growth which equals $252 Million. While the Jets had a bigger growth with 11%, and maintained their 6th spot with $6.8 Billion. While the commanders fell to the 10th spot after being at the 7th spot last season. In the same report, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment CEO Tad Brown says non-NFL events are a “massive focus” for the Washington Commanders. It will include non-football events, booking concerts, and a series of soccer friendlies in the summer of 2025. The team is even looking to upgrade their stadium to a new location.

Speaking about the upgrade, Magic Johnson grew his net worth from $40 million in 1991 to being a billionaire. In 2024, he currently has a net worth of a whopping $1.2 billion. From Magic Johnson Enterprise to Magic Johnson Theaters the astute mind of 5x NBA champion is on another level when it comes to business.
