Was Debra Rodman the true 'Rebound King' in the Rodman family, overshadowing Dennis's NBA fame?

Dennis Rodman is still remembered as the “Rebound King” of the NBA. Now, a new generation of players like Domantas Sabonis, A’ja Wilson, and others have taken over. But even during Rodman’s era, there was a hidden gem, one who might have been the best of them all. While we know Rodman was great, a former NBA player believes that “The Worm’s” sister was actually the best rebounder in the family.

During his appearance on the All The Smoke podcast’s latest episode, NBA star Larry Johnson shared his memories of Debra Rodman, the 2x national champion. “Now, he had a sister named Debra Robin. She the best rebound in their family,” Johnson shared.

The former NBA player shared that he was from the same neighborhood as Rodman and also shared a few hilarious anecdotes about the Worm. They would play against each other for about nine seasons in the league. But that would bear no consequence on his view of a better rebounder once he came across the 5x champion’s elder sister.

“She went to Louisiana Tech. Her name is Debra Rodman. Look her up the other day… She looked like him, she built like him. Her name is Debra Rodman… She was a beast. That’s the best rebound in the family. Debra Rodman,” Johnson said.

Dennis Rodman had another sister, Kim Rodman. Even when Dennis was drafted by the Pistons, Joe Dumars knew him as Debra’s little brother. And, just as Johnson recalled, Debra was outstanding at rebounding. And it wasn’t just her.

Though not many people tell their story, those who do always admire the brilliance of the Rodman sisters. Debra was a four-year letter winner for the legendary Louisiana Tech teams. She was also one of the 14 individuals that to be inducted into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. The Lady Techsters had finished her college with 1,200 rebounds, ranking no.2 all-time in total rebounds in the program’s history.

No wonder Dumars and Jackson make the said claims.

Both were outstanding players and named All-Americans for their respective schools. When people mention the Rodman sisters were good, it was likely a suggestion that they were even better than their brother. Ironically, Dennis Rodman, who later became known for giving opponents a hard time in the NBA, used to lose to his sisters in basketball. He was eventually named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.

Interestingly, Rodman wasn’t even interested in basketball until a growth spurt made him much taller. In an old interview, the 6-foot-8 NBA star admitted it was difficult to best his sisters. “I couldn’t beat them,” he confessed as per Sports Casting. “They’d take me and a friend of mine out and beat us all the time.”

They would thus become his motivation, prompting a desire to show them he wasn’t going to end up on the losing side all the time. “I finally decided one day if they could do it, I could do it.” We know where that led him. His sister Kim, on the other hand, played for Stephen F. Austin in Texas, while Debra went on to play professional basketball in Italy.
