Magic Johnson’s kindness and high sportsman spirit have landed him in trouble with his franchise’s fanbase. As most football fans know by now, the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 this Sunday at the Superdome in New Orleans, clinching their second Super Bowl title and preventing the Chiefs from making NFL history with a three-peat.

Jalen Hurts put on a show, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another, while kicker Jake Elliott nailed four field goals to help seal the deal. Hurts not only passed for 221 yards but also led the Eagles in rushing with 72 yards on the ground. Despite an early interception, his performance earned him Super Bowl MVP honors.

For Hurts and the Eagles, this was sweet revenge after their heartbreaking 38-35 loss to the Chiefs two years ago, which ended on a controversial holding call. What came from Magic Johnson was a plain simple congratulatory message. “Congratulations to the entire Eagles team, Head Coach Nick Sirianni, and Owner Jeffrey Lurie on their Super Bowl Championship,” he wrote on X.

But here’s where it gets messy—Philadelphia reached the Super Bowl by taking down the Washington Commanders in the NFL Conference Championship. Given the long-standing rivalry between the two teams, Washington fans weren’t having any of Johnson’s praise for their bitter enemy. And just like that, a well-intended tweet turned into a full-blown fan backlash.

Fans respond to Magic Johnson’s tweet of support for the Philadelphia Eagles

What’s your perspective on:

Is Magic Johnson's Eagles praise a slap in the face to Commanders' loyal fanbase?

Have an interesting take?

Johnson’s aforementioned post on X praising the Philadelphia Eagles had Washington supporters fuming. No wonder one fan wrote, “Bro delete this f—— s—… WTF.” The former Los Angeles Lakers star is known for his sportsmanship, always tipping his hat to opponents, even in defeat. But showing love to the Eagles? That’s a whole different level of awkward, considering the Commanders and Eagles have been bitter NFC East rivals for decades.

That pretty much sums up how the Commanders fans would’ve felt about Magic’s post. Another fan made it even clearer: “The tweet should’ve been, F— the eagles.” And it’s not just about the rivalry; it’s about history. The Commanders and Eagles have been at each other’s throats for years, with the infamous Body Bag Game in 1990 standing as a brutal reminder of the bad blood. That night, Philly’s defense sent nine Washington players to the sidelines, proving just how ruthless this matchup can get.

So, for Commanders fans, there’s an unspoken rule: you do not congratulate the Eagles—especially when you own their rival franchise. One fan spelled it out for Magic. “We’ve been over this. You don’t congratulate Philly. You own their rival franchise… Can respect them, without congratulating.”

And really, can you argue with that? For over a decade, as Dan Snyder ran Washington into the ground, Eagles fans flooded FedExField, turning Washington home games into what felt like Philly’s second stadium. Burgundy and gold were drowned out by waves of green, leaving Commanders fans frustrated and fed up.

Given all that, it’s no surprise Magic’s usual fanfare wasn’t met with open arms this time. Instead of admiration, the overwhelming response was something closer to, “F— this wack a– tweet.” Yep, Even Magic’s status as a sports icon couldn’t save him from the backlash.

Amid the chaos, one fan pointed out the real pain behind it all. “It could of been us if we wouldn’t fumbled 3 times against them 2 weeks ago.” Ouch. Magic himself had blamed those turnovers for Washington’s loss, but apparently, that wasn’t enough to get him back in the good graces of Commanders fans. If he really wants to win them over, it seems there’s only one thing left to do—hate the Eagles as much as they do.
