The modern NBA has become an extremely fast-paced game and a high-scoring game. This is solely because of the emphasis on three-pointers in today’s game. It has revolutionised the game of basketball so drastically that the skill sets that the current NBA players develop are extremely different from what players used to do in the past.

In a recent interview, NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson credits Stephen Curry for revolutionising the game of basketball as he recalls how the game was played during his era.

The host of the ?Dan Patrick Show? asks Johnson an interesting ?out of the box? question, ?How would the NBA be without a three-point shot??. Magic Johnson replies, ?The NBA 3 point shot has really revolutionised the game. You see what Steph Curry and the other players are doing. And even the European players. Most of them shoot threes.?.

He further explains as he credits Stephen Curry, ?It?s opened up the lane and the game. The game is different from when I was playing it. When I played then, it was inside-out and now it outside-in with the three point shooting. But it?s great for the game!?.

Players now focus on having lean and muscular bodies rather than having bulky bodies that can take contact. Because the game has become so much more fast-paced today, even the centers are focusing equally on their three-point accuracy as they are on their post-up game.

But what lead to such a drastic change in the way basketball is being played now in comparison to how it was played during the 80s, 90s and the 2000s. What was the trigger?

How Stephen Curry revolutionised the game with his 3-point-shot

Stephen Curry is widely considered as the best 3 point shooter of all-time. His accuracy with the three-point shot is lethal, like a sniper with a clear shot on his target. However, to make a big claim like his three-point shot revolutionised, the game needs more proof.

The Golden State Warriors organisation led by Coach Steve Kerr built the GSW team around the ?baby faced killer?. GSW used different plays utilising Steph?s shooting genius to get him open for a three-point shot. Slowly, the entire GSW team started shooting three-pointers because of highly coordinated offensive plays.

The trigger, however, to revolutionise the NBA into a ?three-pointer? era was Stephen Curry and the GSW?s championship run in 2014 and 2015. Stephen Curry?s high conversion rate and an ‘above-average’ GSW team (on paper) made GSW the ?Top Dog? of the NBA. The other NBA teams had to adapt to survive the GSW?s offensive game and the only way to do that was to beat them at their own game.
