The league has changed a lot over the years. While most of the changes are made for the betterment of the sport, some are just blatantly ridiculous. In recent years, technical fouls have evolved as well. Although the techs are put in place to ensure we have a fair game, it is beyond a layman’s understanding now.
Recently, there have been a lot of discussions about the nature of technical fouls being called by the refs. After one such instance with Anthony Edwards, a 31-year-old NBA star voiced his opinion on the absurdity of these fouls. His sentiments were echoed by a 64-year-old NBA veteran.

Although it is not a very recent trend in the NBA, the nature of fouls being called has changed drastically. As per the rules, any foul that doesn’t fall in the bracket of physical contact is deemed to be technical. Despite not having a clearly defined boundary, the major reason any foul was dubbed technical was because of the unsportsmanlike conduct of an athlete. However, over the years there have been instances that have left hoop fans scratching their heads. One such instance was recently when a tech was called on Edwards.
Earlier, techs were called for unsportsmanlike conduct by an athlete on the court. Whereas, now the same is being called on a mere stare down by an athlete, which is fairly done in the heat of the moment. Calling out the “BS” in the league, Austin Rivers recently tweeted “Can we stop giving guys techs for stare downs…it’s stupid and takes away from the game. Happened again tonight with Ant.” He said that the league wants the athletes to compete at the highest level, but is pulling them down for such trivial issues.

Most technical fouls in the recent history of the sport
If the fouls are being called on a stare-down, the numbers are bound to go up. However, the record holders on this list are athletes who didn’t face such strict guidelines during their time. The number one spot on the list is held by Dwight Howard who has 210 technical fouls over the course of his 18-year-long career. The late great Kobe Bryant sits on the second position in this list with 196 fouls in a 20-year-long career.
