On October 2 in a seismic shift that could reshape the Eastern Conference landscape, the New York Knicks strategized a blockbuster trade to acquire four-time All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Now as the TD Garden in Boston has lit up for the first NBA game of the season between the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics, NBA legend Reggie Miller has made a bold prediction.
The 5x NBA All-Star had posed a question on his Instagram with the caption, ‘Knicks Vs Celtics question please,‘ and his followers were quick to take up on that. But particularly one fan was clever enough to ask a question by capitalizing on the recent Knicks trade. “Will the addition of KAT allow better spacing for Brunson to attack the basket?” read the question. And Miller’s answer to this was, “Absolutely, I’m looking forward to Brunson having an MVP caliber season.”
Towns, one of the NBA’s top versatile bigs, brings a different kind of talent to the Knicks’ bracket. Only part of the story is told by the 7-footer career averages of 22.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. His career 39.8% from beyond the arc speaks volumes to his abilities as a three-point shooter – an unusually talented skill for a center to have. His shooting prowess was particularly on display during the 2021 22 season, when he shot an eye-popping 41 percent from three-point attempts while attempting 4.9 shots per game.

Brunson’s MVP case could be built on the foundation of improved efficiency and scoring opportunities created by Towns’ presence. His already impressive statistics could see a significant boost, similar to how Stephen Curry’s efficiency improved with the addition of Kevin Durant to the Warriors’ lineup. Towns can provide the spacing needed to help Brunson increase his 47.9 field goal percentage and show more scoring and playmaking.

The Knicks’ acquisition of Towns could be just the first of a new era at Madison Square Garden with the landscape of the NBA changing. But Hall of Famer has also made another prediction in his story.
Reggie Miller believes Karl-Anthony Towns will make the New York Knicks a champion
Towns, a former All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year candidate who has the skill to take the Knicks to different heights, can be that difference maker that takes the Knicks to different heights. Even Reggie Miller believes the same!

In the same Instagram story Q&A, Miller was asked, “Alright Regs does Towns make the Knicks contenders for an NBA title!?” It looked like the 59-year-old had the answer already ready. “Shorts Answer, Yes… But health will play a role in the Knicks season.” The health concerns start with Towns himself, who missed 52 games in the 2022-23 season due to a calf strain and has historically struggled with availability.
Apart from him, some other key Knicks players are also on the injury list like Mitchell Robinson and Precious Achiuwa. Now it can be speculated that if Towns can remain healthy and consistent, he could be the catalyst that propels the Knicks to championship contention.
