Will Chris Paul's mentorship be the key to Victor Wembanyama becoming an NBA superstar?

Rookie of the Year on the team and yet the Spurs ended up second last in conference standings last season. While the issue lies with the San Antonio Spurs not having enough depth on the roster, some may wonder to what extent Chris Paul‘s addition to the roster helps the team. Notably, CP3 inked a reported $11 million, one-year deal with the Spurs. Now, Gilbert Arenas believes this move will not just help the Spurs but Victor Wembanyama as well.

Arenas claimed that there were multiple such instances last season where Wemby had his hands up asking for the ball but did not have much success. Gil believes now with an actual point guard on the team in Paul, this problem will be solved for the reigning Rookie of the Year. Kenyon Martin also seemed to agree with his co-host’s chain of thought. “He (Wemby) will get the ball a lot, Chris Paul will lead the league in assists. Top 2 for sure,” he added. The 12x All Star has already secured assists leader spot 5 times in the league so far.

But the Gil’s Arena crew is not of the opinion that Paul’s addition will completely turn the tables for them. “We not saying they finna, like, do crazy things.” And the understandable reason for this is that the upcoming season will still be just Victor’s second year in the league. Arenas believes Paul plays a controlled game, so he will add that aspect of his to the Spurs. But the ex-NBA star still expects the Spurs to “be in that 11-10 round” at best. This concern emerges from Spurs terrible run last season.

However, the Gil’s Arena Crew believes Paul’s addition will help Spurs in another aspect as well, which is him acting as an additional coach of sorts. “Probably teach, teach some of the young guys. Teach some of them young guys how to play, bro… They got like three players over the average, like 20… He’s gonna teach some of them guys how to hold it back.” Notably, Paul is said to have helped a young Shai Gilgeous-Alexander during their time on OKC. And expectations are he will probably be able to do the same for Wembanyama.

The 2023-24 season started with big hopes for Spurs with No. 1 pick 2023 draft pick, Wembanyama on the team. And the franchise already had one of the most successful coaches in the NBA — Gregg Popovich. However, the combo of the 5x NBA champion coach and the Rookie of the Year still failed to secure even the playoff spot for the team.

In fact, the team did not even enter the play-in tournament being second last on the conference standings. And this was when the lack of depth on the Spurs became more evident. However, there were also speculations and allegations that the players did not want to pass the ball to Wemby, possibly because of his rookie status. But Wemby denied these claims during an interview. “Of course, I’ve heard it, but it’s never been even close to reality. There’s nobody on this team that doesn’t want to pass me the ball and there’s nobody I don’t want to pass the ball to,” he said.

In either case, the lack of a real point guard who could make games for Wemby was quite visible. And this is where the ‘Point God’ will be instrumental for the Spurs. A name that CP3 earned for his domination playing as a point guard. So far in the league he has earned 5x NBA Assists Leader, 6x NBA Steals Leader. As for stats, his assists stand at 9.4 per game, making it clear how proficient he can be in making games for Wemby. The reality of the situation will, however, be tested the next season itself.
