Only a few days remain until Christmas, and even adults can’t seem to keep their calm as they hop into holiday traditions. While most people are busy decorating their homes, former NBA player Chris Bosh is doing something very different. Since his retirement, he has developed a strong interest in music and is now performing in a musical. But he’s not alone in the adventure; a special companion is joining him on this adventure!

As part of local holiday traditions, Ballet Austin has returned with its 62nd annual production of the mystical The Nutcracker at the Long Center. One of the largest ballet organizations in the United States, the event runs from Dec. 6 to 23. $205 billion worth Walt Disney remade the film. The highlight of the production remains its longstanding tradition of inviting significant members of the Austin community to play the female character Mother Ginger.

This year, Bosh joined the tradition as the 6-foot-11 former NBA star portrayed Mother Ginger, while his daughter Dylan took on the role of Bon Bon. Other notable Austin figures, such as Austin Monthly editor-in-chief Madeline Hollern and CBS anchor John-Carlos Estrada, also participated in this tradition.

It’s about time the legendary basketball player took up this role. And given his vast repertoire, it’s no surprise that he performed well. After his thriving basketball career was cut short due to an injury, Bosh began exploring new passions—and found one in music.

Chris Bosh found new love in music

He won two NBA titles playing with the Miami Heat. And suddenly, in 2016, he had to stop. He was looking for something that could bring new life, and music became his inspiration. Bosh joined hands with Texas-based artist Deezie Brown and launched his first single, “I Want It All.”

I always read these self-help books. I’m an avid book reader and I read all of these books a while back, and they would always say follow your heart. You have to do things that you love doing. It has to speak to you,” Bosh said about his work in music. “The next thing I knew, I was talking to musicians and I had a guitar in my hand trying to take lessons…I started meeting great people, producers, songwriters, engineers, scientists. Great, great people that just took me in.”

What’s your perspective on:

From NBA courts to ballet stages, has Chris Bosh found his true calling in the arts?

Have an interesting take?

Unlike Shaquille O’Neal, who gets up on stage to entertain the crowd, Bosh feels happier sitting back behind the scenes and moving his fingers. However, he made a guest appearance in episode 7 of Season 7. He also made a cameo in Law & Order. It’s time someone gave him a real full-time role!
