In a recent interview for Yahoo Entertainment, Shaquille O’Neal opened up about his music career as a dubstep DJ and revealed why he embarked on this new journey. Upon being asked whether the “Dub-step Dad” had any self-doubt when thinking of seriously considering becoming a DJ this late in his life, he replied, “No because it’s never about me. I’ve been a star since 18 years old. Can’t get any bigger, can get only smaller by doing dumb stuff and this is definitely not dumb. So I just want to make sure that the kids have a good time and we come with the music that they like.”
Shaq also said that performing for hundreds of thousands of people feels unreal and it is no less than an NBA championship parade. When the interviewer asked why he chose the dubstep genre, Shaq replied that he got interested because of Tiesto. But when he went to Miami to see Skrillex perform live, he fell in love with the “Hip-hop thing he had going on with the hard sounds“.

O’Neal noted that he was inclined towards dub-step because he liked listening to music that makes him want to rage and “push somebody out of the way“. He confessed in the interview that when he DJs, he gets the same adrenaline rush similar to a playoff game. And that speaks volumes of the 4x NBA champion’s love for his role as a DJ.
From this interview, it has become crystal clear that Shaq is not DJ’ing to promote his brand further but simply to spread joy among the younger generation. Also, to make up for the adrenaline rush that he sorely missed after his retirement from the NBA.
