Charles Barkley is never one to hold back his thoughts. As one of the most outspoken voices in the NBA world, Barkley’s rants have become a staple in sports media. Whether on TV or social media, when Chuck speaks, people listen—sometimes with a smile, other times with raised eyebrows. Recently, he didn’t hold back when it came to criticizing a major decision by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Barkley’s latest comments not only targeted the league but also painted a grim picture for fans, hinting that this move could spell trouble for the NBA.

Barkley appeared on Bill Simmons’ YouTube channel, where the duo dove into various topics surrounding the NBA and WNBA. The conversation was flowing until they hit a sore spot: massive player contracts and the controversial topic of load management. Barkley’s reaction was swift and cutting, as he called out the glaring flaws. “The worst aspect of it to me,” he said, hinting at what was to come.

Barkley didn’t hold back, warning that the fans—the backbone of the sport—would be the ones suffering the most. He slammed the concept of load management, especially when paired with the massive contracts players receive. “When we have guys making $90 million and they’re load managing, you think the regular fan gonna be having that sh**? Hell no,” he bluntly stated on The Bill Simmons podcast.

To curb the load management issue, Adam Silver’s NBA decided to set a benchmark for the number of games played for any player to be considered for awards last year. It was set at 65 but that still meant players could miss as many as 17 games every year. Barkley had issues with that and considering he played less than 65 games only thrice in his career (3 out of his last 4 seasons in the league), it is understandable why he was irked.

Barkley voiced his concern that it’s only set to worsen with the NBA’s new TV rights deal, saying, “It’s gonna get worse when guys start making more money when the new TV deal kicks in.” Barkley continued, comparing NBA players to everyday heroes like doctors, police officers, and firefighters, who work tirelessly week in and week out. The 61-year-old pointed out that NBA players, playing just 3-4 days a week, have it easy in comparison.

However, not everyone shares Barkley’s take. The Chuckster’s fellow TNT analyst Kenny Smith jumped to the players’ defense in the ongoing debate. Smith noted, “It’s actually pretty funny that the players are the ones being asked to [play in more games] when load management comes from management.” But the Chuckster has been talking about these issues for quite a while

Charles Barkley worries about the fans and the future

Earlier this year, on Stephen A. Smith’s podcast, Charles Barkley didn’t hold back when discussing the future of the NBA. “You have to be concerned. Everybody has to be concerned,” he warned. Chuck made it clear that alienating fans would be a major mistake, adding, “The fans make everything go. They buy our products. They watch our sport. And once you piss them off, there’s gonna be some repercussions.”

Chuck believes that players are making “way too much money” and fears it’s only going to get worse. According to Barkley, this disconnect will make players even less motivated to play, and load management will keep growing, driving fans away. The more players earn, the less they seem to care about showing up for games, which Barkley thinks is a ticking time bomb for the league.

What’s really troubling, Barkley argues: “When you have guys making 75, 80, 90, God forbid $100 million a year to play basketball, and the guy says, ‘You know what, I’m gonna rest tonight.’ At some point, the fans are gonna say, ‘I’ve had enough.’”
