This is the last season that Inside the NBA runs on TNT but Charles Barkley has his priorities sorted. For those unaware, the beloved show will be moving to ESPN next year, under the NBA and Warner Bros. Discovery deal. However, TNT will continue producing it. While it makes this season quite special for the show’s hosts and crew, Barkley cannot help but prioritize this one member of his family who kind of forces the Chuckster to leave his desk early.

Appearing on The Mark Jackson Show, Barkley revealed whenever he face-times his daughter, his grandson, Henry, has one request—to hurry home soon. The reason behind this heartfelt plea lies in a cherished routine they’ve developed. “We developed this little tradition where I take him out on my golf cart every day after school, and we just drive around for about 30 minutes just asking about his day,” Barkley shared.

The little one, however, wants to do this every day with his Big Pop. Barkley jokingly admitted, “I say, ‘Well if you want to do it every day, not like I have a choice, I’m not going to tell you no.'” While the routine may occasionally be tiring for the 61-year-old, Barkley finds immense joy in being a grandfather.

Describing the surreal experience, he further added, “Every time he says, ‘Big Pop, Big Pop, I love you,’ man, my heart just fluctuates, flutters. And, you know, I see the videos where the kids run to their grandparents when they come to visit. He just runs to me and jumps in my lap, and I’m like… This is great.”

It was during an interview with Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks that Barkley revealed what a perfect day with his grandson looks like for him. For him, nothing beats holding little Henry in his arms while enjoying a football game together.

During that interview, Barkley also shared the sweet story behind his nickname, Big Pop. He revealed how the inspiration struck at an award show where a little girl approached him for a photo. “She says, ‘My big Pop’ when I asked who’d take the picture,” Barkley recounted. This touching moment stayed with him, leading him to adopt the moniker for his own grandson.

Charles Barkley’s grandpa adventures are just as entertaining as his basketball commentary. Appearing on David Letterman’s Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction earlier this year, the NBA legend gave fans a hilarious peek into his life with his grandson, Henry. “Outta all the stuff that’s happening in my life, little Henry and little Charlie, being a grandpa is the greatest thing,” Barkley shared.

But as every grandparent knows, peace and quiet are fleeting when toddlers are involved. Barkley revealed that “all hell broke loose” when Henry started walking. Before that, things were blissful. Barkley had perfected a cozy routine where Henry would lie on his arm while he sipped a beer with the other hand.

“And I’d kiss him like every 15 seconds,” he said. Well, those days are over. Now, Henry’s newfound mobility keeps Barkley running in circles. “He won’t stay still for anything in the damn world,” he joked. And while Barkley loves every moment, he admits his days now revolve around strategically timed naps. Despite this, he seems to not mind a chance for a 30-minute ride on his cart with his grandson.
