Fifteen listed on Basketball Reference — Charles Barkley is a man of many names and he is still earning more. The most recent one came forward during his appearance on NBA TV, as a discussion on golf emerged between former NBA stars Grant Hill and Charles Barkley.

Discussing his plan to play golf, Chuck first termed Hill as a coward for ducking him since the last finals and then asked, “Grant, would you please tell the public what my nickname is?” And as revealed by the former Detroit Pistons star, Barkley’s yet another nickname is ‘Wider Woods. Although there was no context provided, the name is most likely a derivative of golf legend Tiger Woods‘ name.

However, a man with a large build also went viral this year by the name Wider Woods on TikTok. And it’s a possibility this could also be an inspiration for the 11x All Star’s latest nickname. Although ‘Chuck’ is the most commonly used, some other popular interesting nicknames for the former Philadelphia 76ers star include ‘Sir Charles’ (earned as a respect for his gameplay), ‘Bread Truck’ (for raking in millions of dollars), and The ‘Round Mound of Rebound’ (earned in college for leading in rebounds).

While most of these nicknames are associated with basketball, the name revealed by Grant Hill on NBA TV could be his first one associated with a different sport. Notably, Charles Barkley is quite fond of playing golf, evident from him stating he doesn’t like Hill, Vince Carter, and Sam Mitchell for saying they’re better at golf than him. The ex-Sixers star’s friends considered him hilariously terrible at the game, though he has made some improvement now.

Charles Barkley’s improvement at Golf over the year

The 11 All-Star had a different struggle in his initial phase of golfing, as his golf swing was terrible. Not only did it include jerky movements, but awkward pauses, and a choppy downswing. While some reports suggest bad technique to be one factor, the toll taken on his back from the NBA was another. The fact Tiger Woods once hilariously imitated Chuck’s golf swing clears the scenario.

However, the former NBA star did not give up and reportedly took help from the likes of Hank Haney (coached Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara), and advice from PGA Tour professionals like Darren Clarke. He also approached swing instructor Stan Utley, and all of this eventually reflected in Chuck’s game. Not only did Barkley have the awkward pauses eliminated, but his golf swing has gained fluidity as well.

In an interview with ‘People’, the former NBA star thanked Utley for working on his swing. “Now when I go out, I can play. I can have a good time…Made a bunch of good shots. I made some bad shots. But man, when I’m standing over the ball, I’m not terrified like I was really for the last 20 years,” he said. However, the debate of Charles Barkley being better than Grant Hill (as claimed by Chuck) is open.
