Alabama isn’t one to take criticisms lightly. The Crimson Tide took heed to Charles Barkley‘s feedback and proved him wrong. The team made history as they made it to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2004. As expected, one of the key players in the win was Grant Nelson. His offensive and defensive skills were able to overpower UNC in the second half of the game. He not only contributed as a scorer but also effectively defended Armando Bacot, who was anticipated to have a major impact for the Tar Heels.
Previously, Barkley criticized Alabama for being ” frail” while talking about their defensive game. After Nelson’s power performance on both ends of the court, Alabama Head Coach Nate Oats was quick to call out the Hall of Famer. During the post-game interview with CBS, Oats noted, “We were able to guard Bacot a little better one-on-one. Charles Barkley called us frail. I don’t think [Grant Nelson] was frail tonight. He showed up tonight.”

Before predicting the team’s loss during the half-time show of the game, the Philadelphia 76ers legend stated that Alabama might win the game if they listened to his advice. And they did!
Charles Barkley’s advice to the Alabama Crimson Tide
During a CBS interview, Barkley suggested that Alabama could win against North Carolina if they make up 15 three-pointers. Maybe not 15 but the team ended the game racking up 11. The 1993 NBA MVP is well aware of both the team’s weaknesses as well as strengths. During the conversation, Barkley quickly pointed them out.

UNC had two strong forces, Harrison Ingram and Bacot, and were physically quite difficult to defeat. And naturally, Barkley had his doubts on whether the Tides could contain their strong opponents. Pointing out Alabama’s weakness, he said, “They (Alabama) are a very frail team. They can’t handle North Carolina in the post. That’s a huge advantage for North Carolina.” But he didn’t abandon the Crimson Tide completely.
Emphasizing their strong point, Barkley said, “But their 3-point shooting, led by (Mark) Mr. Sears, as one of the great leaders on this team. If they can make enough 3-point shots, they can win this game.” Now, we can see how Nelson elevated the game with 24 points and 12 rebounds while Sears scored 18 points while handling their defense.
