The basketball world is finally giving back to its legends. The efforts and dedication of professional basketball players who have been able to inspire generations of NBA fans are finally getting their due credit. Following the news of the unveiling of the Late Kobe Bryant’s bronze statue at Star Plaza outside of Crypto.com Arena on Feb. 8, 2024, another basketball legend has been given his due credit.

San Antonio Spurs legend George Gervin was recently honored by his alma mater. Easter Michigan University recently further cemented the ABA/NBA legend’s legacy in the form of a bronze statue. The bronze statue will stand outside the George Gervin GameAbove Center on the Eastern Michigan University campus.
With a combined ABA/NBA total scored points of 26,595, the San Antonio Spurs legend was drafted into the NBA in 1974. He played as a shooting guard/small forward and was an offensive nightmare for the opposition. In his 10-year NBA journey, he inspired future generations of NBA fans with his nonchalant playing style and scoring accuracy.
One of those inspired NBA fans was the “Big Ticket”, Kevin Garnett. He celebrated 71-year-old’s recent honor by posting on his Instagram saying, “Congratulations Ice @George Gervinn.” and “Yasssssss…about time.“. The 2008 NBA champion was drafted in 1995, exactly 10 years after George Gervin retired from the NBA.

George Gervin was drafted as the 40th pick in round 3 of the 1974 draft. Popularly known as ‘Ice Man’, the NBA Hall of Famer was a former American Basketball Association all-star player for the Spurs. He was a formidable professional player during his tenure in the ABA. Instead of heading to the NBA to join the Phoenix Suns in their ’74 draft, he stayed with the ABA and joined the San Antonio Spurs.
His transition to the NBA two years after would be with the team that defined his professional basketball career. He defined the San Antonio Spurs basketball for a long time. George Gervin’s consistent performances drew fans to the NBA team. He was able to average a minimum of 14 points in all of his games in his entire NBA career!
