Boasting a net worth of $160 million, Carmelo Anthony has a lifelong dream of owning an NBA team. “Now! I want it now!” The 10x All-Star spoke to Marc J. Spears of ESPN in June this year. Although the NBA dream hasn’t come to life yet, Anthony has been part of ownership groups around the globe. So, he shared his perspective on the hot topic of the new ownership of the Boston Celtics, which may or may not involve Jeff Bezos.
Ten days ago, Bill Simmons from The Ringer shared that there was brief potential for the Amazon founder to be involved in the sale. A few days later, Nick Wingfield of The Information denied those reports. And recently, Carmelo Anthony spoke on his podcast, responding to fan questions about the ownership situation of the Celtics. Melo said, via the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, “So if we hearing about it and in some things if we hear about it right like do your own research.”
However, Melo was not against the idea of the second-wealthiest person in the world joining any ownership group. “I like the conversation of bringing an owner in who have those type of connections, not resources but those type of connections that can tie the game altogether,” he added. Carmelo Anthony liked the idea, not only because of the financials but also because of the overall contacts that might work for the community.

“It’s a lot of upside to having somebody like Bezos,” said Melo. He was also open to working with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James for co-owning a team. He called it as being “generational,” highlighting that that’s “legacy.” He also hinted that he was working from the perspective of building an ownership group.
The 2013 NBA scoring champion said that he was traveling to Japan and other places in order to raise funds. Currently, his dream of owning an NBA team might happen someday, however, he has not stopped gaining valuable experiences.
Carmelo Anthony is building his legacy
Just last month, Melo hinted at owning a team in the Big3 league, saying, “I mean we could work with some ownership team here out of Baltimore. We figure that out.” From the next season, the league is shifting towards a home-based model. Out of the 12-team expansion, 4 teams have been locked so far. The latest one was GameAbove Sports ownership group acquiring the team in Detroit, representing the State of Michigan.
The other three teams are DCB Sports, a Los Angeles-based team; Heath Freeman, who leads the ownership group for the team in Miami; and Eric Mullins and Milton Carroll, who acquired the third location-based team for Houston. Speaking about purchasing, Carmelo Anthony also has secured ownership roles in two different leagues.
The revolutionary women’s ‘Unrivaled’ league announced that Carmelo Anthony was part of the seed round of investors. Apart from this, the premier league in Australia and New Zealand also announced Melo’s ownership role. The National Basketball League (NBL) currently has 10 teams, and the deal includes ownership in a future expansion team.
