He was a young NBA athlete, and she was a rising TV star — Carmelo Anthony and La La Anthony’s first meet cannot be described more simply. Despite coming from two different worlds, they united to form a new one for themselves. And in doing so, the couple witnessed a lot throughout their time with each other. Whether it be growing in their respective fields, or welcoming a new life to this world. Years later, both of them still stand as accomplished individuals but are no longer together.

So we are going to have a closer look at their relationship and what led to their split.

Carmelo Anthony and La La’s relationship timeline

The two met in 2003, when the Denver Nuggets had just drafted Melo and La La had gained popularity through her stint as VJ on MTV’s Total Request Live. The two are said to have been introduced by a common friend, DJ Clue.

“I was hosting a show on MTV with DJ Clue at the time, and he said, ‘I really want to introduce you to someone that wants to meet you.’ He introduced us, and it started off as a friendship, which evolved over time into something more,” the ‘Power’ star told Munaluchi Bride in 2011. After dating for some time, Carmelo Anthony and La La eventually got engaged in 2004 on Christmas Day.

After being engaged for almost three years, they welcomed their first and only child as a couple — Kiyan Anthony — on March 7, 2007. However, they did not get married for another three years, eventually tying the knot on July 10, 2010, at Cipriani’s in New York.

“We’ve been engaged since Melo was 19 years old. We were like ‘Let’s just take our time… Didn’t put a time on it. I stopped kind of thinking about it,'” La La told Access Hollywood in 2012. The two stayed married for more than a decade and had multiple such moments where they appreciated each other’s presence in their lives. However, this came to an end with a divorce in 2021.

What went wrong between Melo and La La?

The first time there were allegations of cheating against Melo, it proved to be the turning point in their relationship. Just two years after marriage, a 19-year-old woman alleged she dated Melo for two months after he approached her on Twitter.

La La had then defended her husband against these allegations without addressing the 19-year-old woman. “I wouldn’t be with someone if he was cheating on me… There’s no part of me that’s okay with that. Now, I don’t go looking for things, but if I was to find out, I would deal with it… But I trust my husband,” she had said in a 2012 interview.

However, years later, there were similar allegations against the ‘Power’ star as well. As per the allegations, she had cheated on Carmelo Anthony with rapper Maino. However, the rumors had stemmed from some Instagram comments by a woman who claimed to be Maino’s girlfriend. So there was no solid ground for the allegations, which were later quashed by the couple by rapping Nicki Minaj’s ‘All Eyes On You’.

But things came to an end after there were again reports of infidelity on Melo’s part. According to the reports, the rumors were that the NBA player had an illicit relationship with a dancer that resulted in pregnancy. Some reports had later suggested that the woman was not a dancer, but a grad student. In either case, Melo’s marriage, which was already reportedly at a shaky stage, ended after a divorce in 2021. The two continue to be involved in supportive co-parenting of their only son, Kiyan, though.
