In 1996, Magic Johnson was one of the most influential basketball players in the league. Despite being placed on such a high pedestal, the Lakers champ was nervous to meet a certain someone. South African freedom fighter, Nelson Mandela was Johnson’s hero. Now, in 2024, the basketball legend and his wife Cookie Johnson’s efforts are set to be recognized by an organization named after the late legend.
In a special event, the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund will honor the Johnson couple for their impactful contributions to the organization. Johnson was inspired by the life journey of the former president and leader of South Africa. Upon meeting the legend for the first time, the Los Angeles Lakers legend expressed a desire to follow his lead. Following this, Magic Johnson and his wife have always shown their support to the fund.
Organized in association with Trigo Networks, the event will be held in Cannes, France. It will take place on May 24, right during the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. “The contributions of Magic and Cookie Johnson reflect the personal ethos of what led Nelson Mandela to start the Fund. This gala truly celebrates those who ‘Serve Like Mandela’,” the CEO of the organization, Dr. Linda Nkube-Ncomo, said about the couple.

A big night of honors and celebrations awaits Magic Johnson in Cannes
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund was started in 1995. Mandela, the former president, had promised his help and contributions during his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in 1993. Since then, the campaign has utilized funds to uplift women’s empowerment groups, hospitals, schools, health care services, and more. One of their initiatives in health care includes the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg. Acknowledging the support from Magic Johnson’s family, Dr. Linda also highlighted the organization’s efforts, saying, “The fund’s programs have impacted thousands of children of South Africa over the years and we need to be able to demonstrate the life-changing work that we do.”
For the big night, numerous stars will descend upon Cannes other than Magic Johnson and his wife. Ghetto Kids from Uganda, Benjamin Clementine, who was recently featured in the Denis Villeneuve adaptation of Dune, and more are set to grace the event with their presence. Moreover, a special program has been organized honoring the relationship between Nelson Mandela and the late operatic star Luciano Pavarotti. It will be hosted by none other than the renowned award-winning filmmaker, Manuel Alejandro Ruiz.
Last year, The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation honored Cookie and Magic Johnson. The couple was recognized for their support in spreading positive impact and helping people dealing with HIV and AIDS. Remarkably, they have continued to give back to the community, lending a hand through their diverse endeavors.
