As January 26 approaches, people are once again reminded of the accident that took the lives of nine people, including Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. This time, however, the moment will be relived through a documentary announced by Warner Bros. Discovery-owned company. However, the reaction from fans hasn’t been exactly the most encouraging.
The network just dropped big news about the release of a special series, Kobe: The Making of a Legend. This will be a three-part series that focuses on the life and legacy of the 5x NBA champion. As per the new Instagram post, the series will be released on January 25, 2025, just a day before the tragic accident took place. Every Saturday, the show will air at 9:00 p.m.
“Five years after his passing, we are honored to share the story of Kobe Bryant—arguably one of the greatest and most competitive professional athletes of all time. While his legendary career on the court is widely celebrated, this series explores some of the lesser-known dimensions of his life. We’re proud to present a deeper, more nuanced portrait of Kobe and the complicated journey that shaped his legacy,” Eric Johnson, Executive Producer for CNN Original Series said.

This series promises to be more detailed than ever, offering insights into both his personal and professional lives. It will likely begin with Bryant’s childhood, which he spent in Italy. This will be followed by the 5x NBA champ’s high school career and his time with the Lakers. Despite such great potential, fans appear doubtful about the series.

Why are fans worried about the series by CNN?
There have been several docuseries on the Los Angeles Lakers legend so far. The Book of Kobe Bryant, released in 2022, is one of those. It had four chapters that followed notable points of his career. Another series released was Kobe Bryant: The Greatest of All. Most of the others, such as Kobe Doin’ Work, were released when the basketball legend was still with us. A fan believes CNN is only trying to hop on the trend to be in the competition. “CNN trying to stay relevant,” the fan wrote.
In any case, while most of the previous series were great, this series also features intriguing segments. Interviews with Bryant’s former coaches, teammates, as well as family friends will be shown. But fans appear adamant “Hell naw. Keep it,” and “From CNN? I’ll pass.”

Gary Vitti, Tracy McGrady, Sheryl Swoopes, and Knicks legend Jalen Brunson will be featured in the show. While it looks quite impressive, fans aren’t satisfied. Some fans revealed the reason behind their hesitation. “Naaaaaaa 😢 espn.” Another fan wrote, “CNN? Is it all gonna be lies?”
Now, this series is indeed a great option for $26.15 billion WBD-owned CNN to boost its ratings, which faced a 47% dip recently. But certainly, not everyone is on board.
