Finally, the Boston Celtics have won the NBA championships after 16 years of struggle. Fans and former Celtics players are over the moon with the entire situation. Kendrick Perkins admitted the team had been fantastic all season long but was unsure if they could get over the line due to previous failures.
The Road Trippin’ crew had another live session after the final game to discuss the Boston domination over the Dallas Mavericks. Kendrick Perkins and former Mavs great Devin Harris were alongside the co-hosts Richard Jefferson, Channing Frye, and Allie Clifton.
Jefferson wanted to hear from Perkins first, who was the 2008 champion with the Celtics. Perkins had a word of appreciation for all the stars who made a difference starting with the coach.

Joe Mazzulla became the youngest manager since Bill Russell to win the NBA championship. He was the assistant coach and the interim coach before taking charge as head coach in 2023. So many were unsure of his style of play as a coach. Mazzulla added Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis and unlocked the potential of Jaylen Brown.
“Now it’s just to the point where it’s like you know give them the flowers but this team is built to make multiple runs,” Kendrick Perkins said on the podcast.
For Perkins, there is no question that the Celtics should sort out the contract situation of all their stars. He wants Jayson Tatum and Derrick White to stay since they deserve the big money raise. Perkins believes it might be the start of the dynasty era of the Celtics.
Kendrick Perkins is upbeat about the future
According to Perkins, apart from winning the NBA this season, creating a sustainable team for the next season is the key for the Celtics. With Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jaylen Brown locked in for the future, the question remains about Jayson Tatum.
Jayson Tatum is the 6th player since 1980 to win a title while leading their team in points, rebounds, and assists in the Playoffs. Larry Bird, the Celtics legend did it in 1984 and 86, while Rockets Hakeem Olajuwon did it in 1994. They were the only two players to do it before 2000.
Tim Duncan did it in 2003 for the Spurs and LeBron James was the only nominee to do it thrice in 2012, 2013, and 2016. Last year it was Nikola Jokic for the Denver Nuggets.
So it’s obvious that the Boston Celtics would want their star player to extend the contract. As per multiple reports, the Celtics are expected to offer Jayson Tatum a 5-year, $315M supermax extension.
“These last 7 years have been a roller coaster. Up and down, I had to listen to all the s**t that people said about me, and tonight it was worth it,” Tatum said after winning the Championship.
