It’s one thing to help your team win 2 Olympic golds, and another to do it in two different roles. And USA Basketball men’s national team managing director Grant Hill did exactly this with his role at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The 7x All-Star was himself a part of Team USA’s gold win at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. While the entire nation must be grateful to the ex-Detroit Pistons star, Hill has his daughter beaming with pride at the achievement. Myla Hill shared a photo of her father with his 1996 Olympic gold medal along with some other photos.
“Watching you in your role as managing director for @usabasketball has been nothing short of amazing! To win a gold medal as a player AND a managing director is another fantastic accomplishment you have earned!!” read the caption to the IG post. She further emphasized how proud she feels being Hill’s daughter for the model success and class the 7x All Star represents in everything he does.

Team USA had a perfect 8-0 run at the 1996 Olympics. Although Grant Hill may not have been the top scorer, he contributed an impressive 9.7 ppg for his team. This came at a remarkable 66.6 2-point shooting percentage and a decent 33.3 three-point shooting percentage. However, it’s not as if Hill had no challenges with 2024 Olympics just because he was not an active player.
A common perception is that the 7x All-Star did not have much of an option but to say yes when LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant publicly committed that they’ll represent Team USA at the Paris Olympics. It would’ve been on him to find a way out had these players failed to perform at their age. And Curry’s initial shooting struggles at the event were no secret to anyone. Though, fortunately for Hill, everything fell right into place, with even Curry making a stellar comeback. However, a cautionary approach for the future might come in handy.

The challenges that lie in front of Grant Hill for the 2028 LA Olympics
Although Team USA secured the gold in Paris, the overall run has presented some challenges for the future. One of them is Jayson Tatum not getting enough playing minutes. A player coming from a fresh NBA championship being benched against Serbia twice was bound to bring in criticism. And it was not just the fans but some experts and veterans alike.
Even Tatum expressed some degree of disappointment but also showed an understanding of the need of the team’s greater good. However, this lack of playtime may have created a sense of doubt for players to give up their summer-time. A crucial period for next NBA season’s preparation. Apart from this, Grant Hill may also have to face the challenge of a roster that lacks the experience of playing together as compared to other international teams.

As per the reports, the international teams intend to make their players commit to more international events by the next 2024 Olympics. This includes 2027 FIBA, which will be a challenge for Team USA. Not many players would want to give up their two consecutive summers. Now, it’s to be seen how the Team USA Managing Director overcomes these issues to ensure a 6th consecutive Olympic gold for the team.
