Alonzo Mourning is using his star power for the right reasons. One in eight men is diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. It’s a silent killer, and the only thing that saves lives from this disease is early diagnosis. The 7x NBA All-Star, who battled the disease and even underwent surgery, has survived the fight. Now, the NBA legend shares his story to inspire others and raise awareness.

For Mourning, it started as a routine check-up. Even as a former athlete, many like him maintain their regular workout routines and medical check-ups. Thanks to his early diagnosis, the former Charlotte Hornets star received proper treatment and is now free of the disease.

In an urge to raise awareness, Mourning has opened up about his struggles. He was diagnosed with Stage 3 prostate cancer in February and underwent surgery to have his prostate removed in March 2024. He’s been given a clean bill of health. It was a blood test that first indicated something was wrong.

“I wasn’t expecting bad news because I felt so good, man. This is asymptomatic for millions of men. I was one of the fortunate ones. I caught it early; it’s just a simple blood test and saved my life, but if I wasn’t proactive about getting checked, who knows what the outcome could have been?” the 7X NBA All-Star shared.

In late 2022, his urologist, Dr. Maury Jayson, informed him that his PSA levels were abnormal. Following that, he underwent an MRI and a biopsy, which confirmed the diagnosis. Fortunately, the cancer hadn’t spread by that time.

Alonzo Mourning has one wish for the men all around the world

But even while discussing the news, he emphasized how shocking it was for him, considering he felt perfectly fine and healthy. He explained that many men who have it don’t even realize it.

And if not diagnosed in time, it could escalate into a serious issue, and quite quickly at that. “We live in a world where it’s taboo among men to talk about health issues. If I didn’t get routine checkups, I probably wouldn’t be here to talk about this. I want men to be proactive with their health,” Alonzo said to ESPN.

Years ago, Mourning also suffered from kidney issues. His kidneys were failing, and it was during the 2002-2003 season when he was playing for the Miami Heat. After receiving a kidney transplant, he was able to get back in shape. His last stint on the court was in 2008.

After recovering from cancer, he has become an advocate, sharing his journey to urge people to get screened and save their lives.
