The Detroit Pistons made a record no NBA team wants. After falling to the Brooklyn Nets 112-118, the team has had a total of 27 losses. Their skid now gives them the dubious honor of the longest losing streak in a single season in NBA history. The disappointment is so thick, that Reggie Miller came to their comfort.

The Pacers legend and TNT analyst had poignant words for the Pistons organization to get over this setback. “The game of basketball can be very humbling. I feel for Coach Monty Williams and crew. Just keep plugging away,” Miller wrote on Instagram.

As he said, these highs and lows are part of the game. The Philadelphia 76ers still hold the record for the longest losing streak overall, suffering 28 losses across the 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns. It’s still the second-longest streak across the four major sports leagues combined as the Sixers, Cavaliers, Buccaneers (NFL), and Colonels (MLB) are tied with 26-game losing streaks.

Detroit started the season with a win against Chicago Bulls, which isn’t doing too well for itself either. It’s now 2-28 in the season.

Pistons coach, Monty Williams was expressive that he didn’t want to be associated to this record ahead of the game in Little Caesars Arena. “Was it heavy? It’s been heavy for a while. That’s just the nature of this kind of losing streak and it’s not gonna change because we’re grading the level of it, we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do to change it.” Williams said.

Williams’ NBA career went parallel with Reggie Miller’s. The 2022 Coach of the Year was not playing with or on the coaching staff of the Sixers during their losing streak. So this one with the Pistons is the first on his record.

Pistons implement Reggie Miller’s advice

Cade Cunningham made a game-high 41 points but it wasn’t enough to give the Pistons one more to save them from this record. Fans are turning their backs on them, shouting “Sell the team,” in the arena. Several Pistons players said these chants are weighing heavily on morale.

Cunningham is not letting it bring his team down though. He gave his team a much-needed pep talk to keep playing irrespective of mounting losses.

As Miller said, they have no choice but to keep playing. Similarly, Cunningham said, “We have to dig deep and get ourselves out of it,” after the game. Their next game is before the New Year against Boston. It remains to be seen how they get out of this slump.
