Team USA was in Manila today to play in the semifinals of the FIBA World Cup against Germany. After leading at halftime, the team was happy and celebrating. With Carmelo Anthony in attendance, Austin Reaves even pulled out the signature Carmelo Anthony’s three to the dome celebration after making a jumper.

But the celebration didn’t last as Germany rallied back to take the lead in the third. Even with the USA outscoring Germany in the fourth, they couldn’t climb back and get the win. The former Los Angeles Lakers legend took to Twitter to share his disappointment in the team with the fans.

The game got close towards the end of the 4th quarter as the USA closed out a 10-point deficit. Towards the end, the score was 109-114, and Austin Reaves took a heavily contested 3-point attempt and missed. This sealed the fate of Team USA. Anthony Edwards also had a costly turnover down the stretch by throwing the ball out of bounds.

Following Team USA’s heartbreaking yet humiliating loss against Germany, the Los Angeles Lakers legend shared this in response. The 5-time champion tweeted, Just watched the USA Men’s basketball team play Germany in the FIBA World Cup and I was very disappointed we loss 111-113. Now instead of playing for Gold, we will be playing for Bronze“.

Magic Johnson is visibly upset at this result. He knew the team had what it took to get it done. But the unnecessary fouls, whenever Germany was taking a 3-pointer, and the USA was not able to stop them from scoring, kept the USA digging their own grave.

Recently, former Los Angeles Lakers player Nick Young showered high praise on Anthony Edwards and said that the league is his. He also said that Edwards is the next Michael Jordan. But his words lost meaning as Edwards failed to lead the team to the finals. Even though Reaves and Edwards dropped the ball at the end, they were some of the bright spots in this match. They shot back-to-back threes that allowed the USA to close the gap between Germany.

The future of basketball around the world

It’s been known for a long time that the rest of the world has caught up to the USA in basketball. The overwhelming difference in talent is not something we see anymore. If you are not ready and fully prepared to face an opponent, then there is no guarantee that you can win a match anymore.

Kobe Bryant was asked in 2019, when he was the brand ambassador of FIBA if the rest of the world had caught up to the USA. His response was not that they have to catch up; he said that the world had already arrived a few years ago. It’s for the players to recognize that they are not vastly superior to the rest and not give their 100% and still win. Team USA had some of the best players in the NBA, and Germany had Dennis Schröder, Daniel Theis, and Andreas Obst.
