For NBA players, Thanksgiving offers a brief pause from their demanding schedules to share moments of laughter and love with their loved ones. Stars like Stephen Curry and LeBron James often share glimpses of their festive celebrations, adorned with elaborate dinners and heartfelt reflections. But for some, the occasion can also bring a bittersweet mix of emotions—a stark reminder of what, or who is missing. Such is the case for former NBA player and current analyst Kendrick Perkins, whose personal loss has cast a shadow over this season of thankfulness.
This Thanksgiving, Perkins posted a heartfelt story on Instagram that captured his inner struggle. The post featured a photo of his late nephew, affectionately known as “Lil Toe,” accompanied by the poignant caption: “Gone but never will be forgotten. Love you and fly high nephew… I’ve been trying to stay busy not to think about you not being here Nephew but yesterday we missed you like crazy!!! I could hear you saying ‘Damn Unc you eating again’.”
For the unversed, Perkins’ nephew passed away in August, and though the reason for the untimely d***h is not known, it surely has left an irreplaceable void in Perkins’ life. Previously, the Celtics legend had mentioned in a heartfelt Instagram post how he started his life in Boston along with his nephew and his wife Vanity Alpough, and also how he had always treated him like a son.

“I need to express to the world how much you meant to me and I remember thinking that you were my son before I even had children. I remember when you were 3 years old coming to Boston and it was just me, you, and your Aunt Van. Man nephew those were the days when you hogged the TV all day and night making me watch Sponge Bob!… As an uncle I want to say THANK YOU for letting me enjoy 18 years of your life,” wrote Perkins as a caption for an Instagram post.
For many, Thanksgiving is a time to count blessings, but it’s also an opportunity to remember and honor those who have passed. Perkins’ post is a heartfelt tribute to Lil Toe, a young life that ended too soon but left an indelible mark on those who loved him. But this void hasn’t stopped the 40-year-old from making other lives cheerful.

The Lighthouse Church and Ministries originally partnered with Perkins to distribute meal kits, complete with turkeys, sides, and desserts to 300 needy families for this Holiday season. “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it’s all about giving and that’s exactly what we did the Sunday. Special thank you to my brother/Pastor @pastorkeion and First Lady @iamshaunie and our @lhhoustonchurch family for embracing and love,” read the caption of the post by Perkins.
Moreover, this was not only it. The church authorities had handpicked families based on their needs to attend the TLHC’s Sunday service as guests of Keion and Shaunie Henderson. For the Celtics star, the partnership is more than philanthropy; it’s about creating lasting memories and uplifting others, even amidst his grief.
