Magic Johnson vs. Anthony Edwards: Is the Larry Bird comparison fair or just wishful thinking?

If anybody follows Magic Johnson on social media, they would find him to be one of the most supportive figures. From his political stance to views concerning any team, the Los Angeles Lakers legend is always very generous. But recently, he went off on the Wolves star regarding his comment on the players of the previous generation. Another former NBA champion backed Johnson’s claims by providing Anthony Edwards with a quick history lesson.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jeff Teague spoke highly of the previous generation of players, especially Larry Bird. The 36-year-old said, “Bro no, Magic the ultimate winner for sure. But they did have skill though, like if you go watch Larry Bird he play a whole game left-handed.” Yes, Larry Bird did play a game with his left hand, back in February 1986.

Boston Celtics were facing the Trail Blazers and Bird scored 47 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists by playing the majority game left-handed.”I don’t know how much more skill you can have to play a whole game with your offhand, the 2021 NBA champion said, via 520 Club Podcast. He also understood where Ant-Man’s comments came from.

I mean, he younger than us. Though so he, he probably like, he think they ancient, you know what I’m saying? He think they like Bob Cousy to us,” Teague said. Bob Cousy turned 96 this month. Many fans currently wouldn’t have watched him win 6x NBA championships. But, this was the exact comment Edwards made.

I didn’t watch it back in the day, so I can’t speak on it,” The current Wolves star said to the Wall Street Journal. But he went ahead anyway, dissing the legends of the past, which Magic Johnson did not appreciate.

Magic Johnson replied not once but twice to Edwards’ claims

Although he admitted to not watching the league back then, he formed his opinion, stating that players were not skilled. Edwards remarked, “But I don’t think anybody had skill back then. Michael Jordan was the only one who really had skill.” The 23-year-old also added fuel to the fire by stating everybody in the NBA now is skillful.

Have an interesting take?

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith asked Magic Johnson about the same, during a conversation at the Yaamava Resort & Casino in California, to which Johnson replied, “I don’t ever respond to a guy who’s never won a championship.” That was not all, he further stated that he doesn’t recollect Edwards being neither a college champion nor even a high school champion.

Another clip from the same conversation was shared recently, where Johnson gave logical reasoning to back his skillful teammates and rivals. He said, “What they don’t understand, Michael Jordan didn’t win in his 6th, 7th year. So I guess it was some great players before Michael Jordan.”

In 1984, the Bulls drafted Michael Jordan, but he won his first championship in 1991. In the meantime, Larry Bird and the Celtics won the league twice. Even Magic Johnson won thrice during that period. So, before MJ and the Bulls started their dynasty’s claim, it was Bird and Johnson and other players winning. This proves Magic’s point of not just one player being skilled during that time.
