Just days ago, the NBA community was buzzing with Angel Reese-Caitlin Clark match-up. Adding to the hype, Reese debuted Reebok’s first performance basketball sneaker in a decade — Reebok ‘Engine A’. While the brand’s President of Basketball and the LSU star’s ‘Uncle’ Shaquille O’Neal proudly watched courtside, one key figure was missing: Allen Iverson, the Vice President of Reebok Basketball. Instead of joining the awaited moment, Iverson was 800 miles away in his hometown of Newport News, Virginia. Why? For Newport News Community Day.

11× NBA All-Star Hampton Roads native was busy making a difference for the youth as they prepared to head back to school. Teaming up with Newport News Councilman John Eley, Iverson handed out school supplies to local students and families at Anderson Park. The event wasn’t just about giveaways—it also featured a basketball tournament and a celebrity kickball game, bringing together kids and athletes alike.

Meanwhile, Councilman John Eley reflected on the significance of the day, saying, “It was something that me and Allen Iverson wanted to do to continue to give back to the community, and we’re excited to be here.” The numbers speak volumes. Nearly 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to students.

On the other side, Shaq, no stranger to charity work himself, likely didn’t mind Iverson’s absence from the Angel Reese’s Reebok debut. The founder of Shaquille O’Neal Foundation made a similar contribution back in Texas in July and understands the importance of these moments. More so, watching Iverson’s connection to Newport News run deep as he made a surprise appearance at an HBCU game—out of sheer passion, not obligation. This bond with his hometown dates back to his high school days and continues to remain cherished.

Back at Bethel High School in Hampton, Allen Iverson wasn’t just a basketball star—he was a two-sport sensation, leading his school to state championships in both basketball and football. As the quarterback and a point guard, he guided Bethel to the top while making it as one of the country’s top prospects. In reciprocation, his alma mater has honored the NBA icon by naming a gym after him. But certainly, that isn’t all.

Recognizing his impact on the community, March 5 was even declared Allen Iverson Day by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. Then to celebrate the city unveiled ‘Allen Iverson Way,’ a street sign placed between Wickham Ave. and Walnut Ave.

“Being from Virginia and me changing the culture, everybody talks about how A.I. changed the culture, man that was cause of you dudes in here and you women in here,” The Answer said in gratitude.
