Christmas came early as many celebrities stepped out to bring smiles to the faces of underprivileged children. One among them was former NBA player, Allen Iverson, who returned to his hometown to light up the festivities by distributing wholesome goodies to the children. 

The Philadelphia 76ers legend visited the local Boys & Girls Club in Newport News for the holidays. He arranged to donate toys and gifts to 50 children at the Club of Greater Hampton Roads. “The Answer,” himself grew up in the Boys & Girls Club and therefore made it a point to return to the place time and again to give back to the younger community. Pictures of Iverson posing alongside the happy kids were also shared on X.

Hal Smith, President and CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula spoke about Iverson who spent much of his childhood at the Boys and Girls Club, where he not only learned to play sports but also developed as a person. “Allen grew up in this Boys and Girls Club. This is where he learned to play sports and learned to grow,” Hal Smith said.

Iverson divided his time between the Greater Hampton Roads Club on Hampton Avenue and another club on Shell Road during those formative years. As mentioned, this wasn’t the first time the basketball legend returned to his hometown.

Allen Iverson’s initiative for a noble cause wins hearts 

The former Philadelphia 76ers player has always been very athletic and skilled in playing both basketball and football. However, Iverson began to choose basketball as his professional career when his mother insisted. He continued his education at Bethel High School.

Just last year, he teamed up with Newport News Councilman John Eley to give out school supplies to students and families at Anderson Park. As per sources, nearly 1,000 book bags filled with school supplies were given away to the children. It was a part of Iverson’s community day. And the initiative also included a basketball tournament and celebrity kickball tournament which is for the development of aspiring athletes.

It was something that me and Allen Iverson wanted to do to continue to give back to the community and we’re excited to be here,” Eley shared. No wonder why Iverson’s fans love him so much.
