Is Allen Iverson's political involvement a game-changer for athlete activism in America?

Allen Iverson may have had a controversial life, but rarely did he get involved with politics. In fact, Hollowverse has mentioned the ex-Philadelphia 76ers star as “a largely non-political person”. But it seems the 49-year-old recently broke such extreme notions about his political activeness.

As per the recent reports, Iverson stepped into the political spotlight through his involvement with The Vote Or Else Initiative in Philadelphia. According to CBS Philadelphia, the initiative aimed to encourage voter registration and participation ahead of the upcoming elections. So, while AI was raising awareness for active voter participation, he didn’t exactly support any particular candidate openly.

The event featured a lineup of notable figures. Allen Iverson headlined the event alongside NFL legend Michael Vick and rapper Freeway, among others. The goal was to inspire communities to make their voices heard on election day. As reported by CBS Philadelphiathe event on October 10 kicked off at 11 AM with a Muslim community engagement forum.

This was followed by two community canvassing initiatives in West and North Philadelphia, where volunteers reached out to local residents. The day concluded around 7:30 PM with a “Vote or Else” town hall at Liacouras Center. All events were free to attend, and participants were encouraged to join any session that suited them.

Now, although Allen Iverson did not voice his political views in favor of any particular candidate, it’s not as if that’s the case with the entire NBA community.

Has a certain section of the NBA community made its mind regarding the upcoming election?

Ever since ABC News hosted the first live debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, it’s become clear where some in the NBA community stand. If you’ve been following the reactions, you might have noticed how multiple basketball figures have been pretty vocal about their views. This includes Magic Johnson, Evan Turner, and WNBA star Natasha Cloud and some other names.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Allen Iverson's political involvement a game-changer for athlete activism in America?

Have an interesting take?

They’ve made no secret of their belief that Harris came out on top during the debate. Magic Johnson, for instance, shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter). He praised Harris, saying, “Kamala Harris demonstrated important facts and information tonight. Her intelligence and plans should win out… We’re here to help you finish the job….” His message resonated with many of his followers, hinting at a broader sentiment within the community.

But here’s where it gets interesting—Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson took it a step further by hosting Harris on their podcast. This seemed to solidify the assumption of NBA support. Yet Barnes didn’t close the door entirely. He’s open to hosting Donald Trump too, though he did add a little warning. He’ll be asking some “real questions” if Trump comes on. Now, it’s to be seen if, after his recent political spotlight, Allen Iverson becomes more vocal about his choice of candidate.
