Reebok fiercely competed with people’s favorite Nike in the 90s and 2000s. However, it did not last long after they failed to bag contracts with a few superstars. Reebok was unable to sign No. 1 draft picks or superstar prospects like LeBron James, Derrick Rose, Kyrie Irving, etc. Sadly, the trend continues even now.

Finally, the company has decided to put an end to it by calling Shaquille O’Neal back to their team, but this time for a new role as president of basketball. All this while, this is the president role that Shaq was teasing about on his Instagram. Big Diesel was the last superstar Reebok signed. Since then, they have been inefficient in signing stars who could have brought them fame in the NBA. Even their contract with Shaq ended on a bitter note.

However, now it’s time for redemption. And Shaq is not alone in this journey. The 4x NBA champion will be joining hands with Philadelphia 76ers legend Allen Iverson, who has been made the Vice President of this project. In an interview, Shaq shared about his new role, “For me, it’s a full circle moment. You know my role probably be to oversee basketball strategy, help advise on product development, and develop partnerships with players and organizations.”

Reebok also aims to hit $10 billion in sales in the next four years.

Shaq’s sneaker deal with Reebok, ‘The Shaq Attaq’ had a lot of similarities to Michael Jordan‘s sneakers with Nike. However, ‘The Shaq Attaq‘ had an advantage when it came to pricing. Big Diesel would sell shoes that are capable of competing with the Jordan’s quality but at a much lower price.

According to footwear writer Nick De Paula, “a lot of Shaq shoes over the years-they were like Jordan 3 inspired,”. Speaking on the pricing, Paula added, “It’s awesome because if you are a kid and like you know, this shoe is 35 or 40 bucks, you can’t afford 150 and plus.”

This not only helped families save money but also earned Shaq a larger customer base. Well, now you know why Reebok hired the 2000 MVP back as the president of basketball.
