It’s not just the fans—players, including LeBron James himself, are still dazed after one of the biggest mid-season trades in NBA history. He found out about the trade at a dinner table in New York, and bid an emotional farewell to his teammate Anthony Davis, but welcomed Luka Doncic to LA with open arms all the same. The dust from the aftermath of this trade is far from settled, despite that the Lakers still have a roster to balance before the Thursday trade deadline. While analysts and trade pundits have their own predictions to make on who would fill the defensive side of the pain, Dwight Howard, wants us to think bigger.

Imagine KD Bron Luka same team ⌛️.” The 3x DPOY tweeted adding fuel to the Kevin Durant trade rumors. But, would the Suns really want to trade their 26.9 PPG-averaging MVP? Given the blockbuster trade at hand, anything seems possible. Furthermore, if SI’s Chris Mannix’s claims are to be believed, Phoenix Suns could consider trading Durant in their efforts to acquire Jimmy Butler. So, let’s say KD is made available—even then there would be teams already ready to land the former MVP with Golden State Warriors at the front of the line.

Don’t you worry, though. Dwight Howard’s wishes could come true still. According to The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer, GSW is exploring the possibility of bringing LeBron and KD together anyway. “Sources say the most ambitious idea being tossed around among Golden State’s decision-makers: Is there any feasible pathway for the Warriors to pull off the dreamiest of outcomes and find a way to bring both James and Durant to The Bay?,” Jake Fischer had shared. Now, their non-existent asset pool makes the whole trade seem unlikely, but after last weekend, expect the unexpected.

Although GSW has a history of pulling exceptional moves, make no mistake that even if something like this does happen, it would be James, Curry, and KD (a never-before trio) playing together. Still no sign of Luka. However, it’s not all about the Warriors alone. LA Lakers, too, have used up their assets. After sacrificing Anthony Davis to procure Doncic, it doesn’t seem viable for them to add Durant to their roster as well.

But that’s still not their only concern. With assets stretched thin and questions lingering, one former champion has a major concern that could impact the Doncic-James partnership.

LeBron had plenty to process the night the news of the trade became public. Yet, that didn’t stop him from warmly welcoming Doncic to LA. “He called me right away. He was in New York, so he called me right away. We didn’t talk much, because he said ‘I understand what you’re feeling,’ but it was really nice of him to call me right away and welcome me to LA.” Luka said sharing LeBron’s message with him. The Slovenian player may have felt blindsided and pranked by the sudden trade, but “It’s like a dream come true.” for him.

Sure, the pairing feels dreamy. Luka Doncic will bring elite playmaking and scoring to the Lakers alongside LeBron James, making them an offensive powerhouse. However, there’s one big concern that former Lakers star Magic Johnson believes the team could face: defensive stability. With Anthony Davis gone, the Lakers have lost their best interior defender and rim protector.

According to him, having three players (we can’t forget Austin Reaves, right?) who want the ball in their hands for offense certainly seems like an issue of usage rate for the Lakers coach JJ Redick. “Usage rate may be a problem for the Lakers because LeBron, Luka, and Austin all love to have the ball in their hands. How will Coach JJ Reddick design an offense that keeps all 3 of them happy?” Magic had expressed in a tweet.

For now, the Lakers find themselves in uncharted waters. Luka Doncic and LeBron James form one of the most exciting duos in the league, but questions remain about how they will address their defensive void post-Anthony Davis. Meanwhile, trade speculation continues to swirl, with Dwight Howard’s dream of a Durant-LeBron-Luka super team remaining a long shot. Whether the Lakers find a way to balance their roster by the deadline or ride into the playoffs with their current squad, one thing is certain—this blockbuster move has already changed the landscape of the NBA.
