Usually, the summer months are a quiet period in the NBA calendar. While free agency offers are some exquisite highlights, overall, the summer months are a slow time for basketball fans. Not this year around, though – whether it was Damian Lillard’s trade request or Michael Jordan parting with the Charlotte Hornets. However, the biggest news of the summer months was the upheaval at ESPN.

With many of their top names already let go, the latest victim left a Boston Celtics legend shocked.

In the latest story coming out of the media mogul, the man with the 2nd most assists in NBA history has also been let go. After years of being one of the best voices in the game, Mark Jackson’s tenure comes to an end.

For basketball fans, it is a true shock as Jackson was among the best play-by-play commentators in the business. His breakdown of games, plus various anecdotes was a constant highlight for anyone tuning in to a match.

Interestingly, it seems former Boston Celtics champion Kevin Garnett is also a fan. While he’s been critical of ESPN’s moves over the summer, this one truly left him shocked. Further, he even prompted some conspiracy theories.

Sharing the news on his IG story, the Big Ticket wrote, “Damn ESPN…They fired Mark Jack.” He continued, “Somin going on.” With Garnett’s coach from his championship-winning days rumored to take over after Jackson, maybe KG knows more than he’s letting on.

Prior to the 20-odd people being let go to meet fiscal goals, ESPN caught a lot of flak from NBA veteran Charles Barkley. Never one to shy away from voicing his opinion, the Chuckster was in peak form, criticizing the company for its unsavory workplace culture.

?Not gonna work me like a dog and not pay me. They?ll have me on ESPN One, Two, Three, ESPN News, ESPNU, ESPN Radio! They?re gonna have me on ESPN Deportes, saying muy bien, gracias!? Amidst the firings, Barkley’s clip went viral again, so much so that it found its way to KG’s IG story, with the former DPOY in full agreement with Chuck, ?Chuck SAY IT LOUDER?..Shots fired,? he wrote.

It seemed like payback for the company’s harsh firing of his friend and former teammate, Paul Pierce. Perhaps, with his former coach joining the ranks, Garnett’s critique of the company will be more subdued.

Either way, for Stephen A. Smith’s employer, it seems like a tough road ahead.
