Tonight, the Washington Commanders might’ve landed themselves a sleeper steal, grabbing Trey Amos with the 61st pick of the draft. The Commanders believe they’ve added a tough, versatile cornerback who brings both grit and mental toughness to an evolving defensive unit. And sure, it’s draft week, a time for wondering, celebrating, and overthinking every single pick like its life or death. Ask Shedeur Sanders how it feels to be avoided for so long; thanks to the Cleveland Browns who picked him finally. But this moment isn’t just living inside the football world. The basketball world isn’t too far behind either. And neither is Magic Johnson, who always seems to pop up when you least expect him on nights like these.
The Washington Commanders had to play the waiting game before making their second selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. With just four picks left over the final six rounds, general manager Adam Peters knew every move needed to count this year. Last season was all about quantity, filling as many roster holes as possible. This time, it’s about adding quality pieces. Fans started getting restless as big-name prospects kept flying off the board faster than anyone expected in Round 2. Finally, with their pick, the Commanders grabbed Mississippi cornerback Trey Amos, a long, physical defender with serious ball skills. Adam Peters called Amos “everything you want as a corner” and honestly, it’s tough to argue. Even Magic Johnson, part-owner of the Commanders, gave the move a thumbs-up and welcomed Amos publicly on X.
Magic Johnson couldn’t hide his excitement about the team’s latest draft pick Saturday night. Magic jumped on X (formerly Twitter) to show love and congratulate the young cornerback on joining the Commanders family. He posted a photo of Trey Amos with a welcome message that fans instantly picked up and shared around. “I want to welcome CB Trey Amos to the Washington Commanders!” Magic wrote, making sure his new guy felt the love early.

In the post-draft press conference, Adam Peters didn’t hold back his confidence in the Commanders’ newest cornerback. “I have a ton of confidence, and I know we all do, that he’s[Trey Amos] going to transition really well here” Peters said. And when your team’s co-owner, Magic Johnson, personally welcomes you on social media, you know it’s a night to remember. For Trey Amos, this is one of those career moments that’ll stick with him for a long, long time.

Magic Johnson and his journey with Washington Commanders
Earvin “Magic” Johnson has always been more than just a basketball legend. The man simply doesn’t know how to sit still. After winning five NBA championships, Magic built a $1.2 billion empire through movie theaters, sports teams, and business ventures. In July 2023, Magic officially joined the Washington Commanders ownership group, partnering with Josh Harris and others on the $6.05 billion deal. Calling it “the biggest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Magic spoke with NBC’s Craig Melvin during an emotional interview.
The Hall of Famer made history as the Commanders’ first Black co-owner and admitted the franchise’s culture desperately needed rebuilding. Fighting back tears, Magic reflected on what this milestone means for him, his family, and the entire African American community. Magic said, “Breaking these barriers and going through these doors is important to me as a proud Black man…I want to excel, not just for me and my family, but for all African Americans.”
