Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan devoted over 15 years of his life to the NBA. In his decade long career, he dominated the basketball court and established himself as one of the best players in the sport of professional basketball. There was one aspect of basketball, however, that Jordan struggled with during his initial years.
Reflecting on the same, a former Atlanta Hawks player, who dominated the ?aspect? before Jordan, spoke about his losing moment in a recent interview.

Former NBA star Dominique Wilkins recently sat down for an interview with Vlad TV. The main topic discussed between the interviewer and the 63-year-old NBA star was the annual NBA Slam Dunk Contest. A competition that has been taking place since 1976, the contest has been described by Sports Illustrated as the ?best halftime invention since the bathroom.”
The interviewer brought up the 1986 Slam Dunk contest that took place during Wilkins’ days as a player for the Hawks. He highlighted that the player lost the competition to his teammate, Spud Webb, despite the fact that the latter was only 5ft 6. Wilkins already had a reason prepared in his mind so as to explain why that happened.
?He lied to me,? said Wilkins as the interviewer let out a laugh, ?I didn?t know he could do some of the stuff he did.?
Despite the fact that his teammate got the better of him, Wilkins was still happy that it was Webb who took home the prestigious title.
?I was more happy for him than me because we?re best friends and so I was happy to see him win,? Wilkins added towards the end.
Michael Jordan’s 1988 Slam Dunk Victory established his prowess
Dominique Wilkins had established his position as a Slam Dunk champion by winning the contest in 1984. Two years later, however, Webb would not only take the title, but he would also become the shortest player to win the contest in its brief history.
Michael Jordan didn?t have much success in the 1984 and 1986 contests. Things, however, started to change soon after that.
The 1988 Dunk Contest saw the Bulls legend donning his iconic ?Air Jordans,? the shoes that were formed as a result of his then year-old partnership with Nike. Everyone in the audience stared in astonishment as Jordan displayed incredible feats of athleticism that day. Running up from the free throw line, with his ?engines revving,??His Airness took a mesmerizing shot that earned him a direct ?50? on the scoreboard.

While the NBA champion had won the Contest a year prior as well, the dunk that Jordan performed from the free-throw line in 1988 established him as a force to be reckoned with. It provided the platform that allowed him to rise and rise until he reached a level that no NBA player has been able to reach at the time.
Jordan?s victory in the 1987 and 1988 contests earned him the nickname with which he is still associated: Air Jordan.
