Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant led the Los Angeles Lakers to a three-peat from 2000 to ’02. But they did struggle to add another trophy during their time together, failing at the semifinal stage in the Western Conference in ’03 and losing to underdogs Pistons in ’04 NBA finals. Given that they were heavy favorites and still lost the finals, Nick Young doesn’t believe in Purple and Gold dominance.
In the battle of ‘what if’, he shared another hot take. Days after not siding with Tim Duncan, which caused a lot of stirs on the internet, Nick Young recently wrote, “I love the Lakers but the shaq and Kobe team is not beating 2017-18 warriors …. all this shaq is the most dominant big ever stuff they lost to Billups, Hamilton, Prince, Rasheed Wallace and Ben Wallace 4-1 respectfully warriors in 5 on both teams ..” Nick Young won his first and only championship with the Golden State Warriors. Although the Warriors never won a three-peat themselves, the team reached the finals 5 straight times and won thrice.

The 17-18 season was definitely a memorable one as it created a unique record. LeBron James led Cleveland to reach the finals for the fourth time in a row, similar to the Warriors. Thus, it was the first time in any of North America’s four major professional sports leagues that the same two teams met for the championship four years in a row. The Golden State entered the finals as favorites and did not disappoint when they won with a clean sweep.
Although the former Warriors star was appreciative of his team, he recently took multiple shots at their star man. He stated that Stephen Curry had to win the championship again, or at least take the team to playoffs after signing the record-breaking $62.6 million extension. He felt that the Chef needed another championship but did a complete 360 when he spoke about Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett.

Speaking about his hot take on Duncan, Young expressed that Kevin Garnett is a better forward. “I feel like his team was better than the Timberwolves. That’s why. But if you put KG on the same team, I think he’d have the same amount of rings,” he stated on Gil’s Arenas podcast.

As per Young, Duncan’s trophies don’t automatically make him a better player. But one thing that he may have missed is that the Spurs forward won five rings in three decades. Even Dwight Howard chimed in with a tweet and said KG not only was his favorite player ever but was also tougher to face in comparison to Tim Duncan.

These what-if scenarios are good for discussion and sometimes help to bring out a better context from the past. His affiliation with the Warriors over the Lakers might be understandable but using different metrics for a player’s legacy might be the reason why the fans voiced against the hot takes of Nick Young.
