It feels like history is repeating itself. Like Carmelo Anthony in 2002, his son Kiyan is gearing up to don the Syracuse Orange jersey. The 17-year-old revealed his decision on his father’s 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, sitting beside his proud parents, Carmelo and La La. This moment wasn’t just a big deal for the Anthony family or the basketball world—it caught the attention of entertainment icons.

The young guard ranked New York’s best recruit and 34th overall in the 2025 class, with over 15 Division I offers. After narrowing it down to six schools in July, he picked USC and Syracuse as his final contenders. Ultimately, he followed in his father’s footsteps. NBA legend Magic Johnson didn’t hold back his excitement, posting, “Like father, like son! First Carmelo and now Kiyan 🔥” on X.

But the love didn’t stop there. Nicki Minaj, a close friend of La La, shared Magic’s tweet and added her heartfelt message: “Congratulations Kiyan!!!! Wow. You were pretty much a toddler when I met you. 😩 So happy for Carmelo & La La ♥.” Meanwhile, singer Ciara took to Instagram, calling Kiyan a “Young Legend” and celebrating his hard work with, “The sky is the limit!” The entertainment world seems just as invested in Kiyan’s journey as the sports community.

And for Melo, this is more than just a proud dad moment—it’s personal. As Syracuse’s standout player during their 2002-03 championship season, he knows what it takes to shine under pressure.

Kiyan got advice from dad Melo

It’s no secret that stepping into the spotlight comes with its challenges, and Kiyan Anthony knows he’ll be under a microscope. “My dad just tells me there’s going to be a lot of eyes on me as soon as I pull the plug,” Kiyan shared with 247 Sports. But instead of letting the attention feel like a burden, Carmelo has taught him to see it as an opportunity. “He says to block it all out and continue to show people the work I’ve been putting in and believe in the work.” For the 17-year-old, it’s all about staying focused and using the pressure to push himself further.

Meanwhile, just days ago, Carmelo Anthony appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where he explained his approach. “The blueprint already laid. If you follow the blueprint, the blueprint will get you there,” Melo said. Back in his day, Melo had to carve out his path, but now, Kiyan has a guide—and a proven one at that.

Still, Melo knows it’s not just about having a plan; it’s about managing expectations. “There’s pressure, and you know what’s ahead of them,” Melo admitted but added, “he’s got me.” Having a father who’s been through the grind gives Kiyan a unique advantage. But Melo is clear—Kiyan’s effort will ultimately shape his legacy. And if his father’s faith is anything to go by, Kiyan is ready for whatever comes next.
