Can Matt Barnes handle Trump’s 'real questions,' or will it be a slam dunk for controversy?

All The Smoke podcast — Kamala Harris first and now Donald Trump as well? Well, at least former NBA star and podcast host Matt Barnes wouldn’t mind having the former president on the show. As every basketball and political enthusiast would know, Harris recently appeared on All The Smoke. The presidential candidate for the upcoming elections discussed multiple topics ranging from racial identity to being a step-parent and even multiple policies with Barnes. So it becomes easier for anyone to assume that the podcast would most probably not entertain someone from the opposition. But is that the case?

During a recent one-on-one interview with Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson, Barnes was asked if there is any entity that is a “no-no” on his podcast. The former NBA star replied there isn’t any person who is a “no-no” on his podcast. He stated he wouldn’t mind interviewing even Trump on his show. But there’s a reason and a subtle warning behind Matt Barnes’ statement. “Just because I want to ask some real questions,” he said.

Notably, ever since ABC News hosted the first live debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump ahead of the presidential elections, a significant part of the NBA community made it clear where it stands. Magic Johnson and Evan Turner, and even WNBA star Natasha Cloud, stood strong with their opinion that Harris emerged as the clear winner from the debate.

“Kamala Harris demonstrated important facts and information tonight. Her intelligence and plans should win out… We’re here to help you finish the job…,” Magic wrote in a post on X. Subsequently, Barnes and Stephen Jackson hosting Harris on their podcast furthered the assumptions of the NBA community’s support.

Now the question is if Trump will also appear on the podcast after what Barnes told Robinson. Well, the ball is completely in the former president’s court. But if he decides to come, he must be ready to face some “real questions” on the show, as Barnes pointed out. Harris had quite a fruitful conversation with the retired NBA forward.

Have an interesting take?

At first glance, a former NBA star and a Vice President might not seem to have much in common. But Matt Barnes and Kamala Harris share a common factor on which they bonded on All The Smoke—they’re both stepparents, navigating the ups and downs of blended families.

Matt Barnes and Kamala Harris shared a common factor to bond on

During the podcast episode, Barnes opened up about his experience as a stepfather. He shared something many stepparents can relate to—being a parental figure without overstepping boundaries. Barnes, a father to three stepchildren (and a father to twins of his own), understands the balancing act that comes with the territory.

Speaking on the same, Harris (a stepmom to two) stated she approached her role with intention and care. She revealed that before meeting her now-husband Doug Emhoff’s children, she made sure her relationship with him was solid. “Children form attachments,” she explained, emphasizing how crucial it was for her to be ready before involving herself in their lives.

Once she did meet them, the connection grew naturally, and now she says they’re “thick as thieves.” She, however, revealed that an important part of the process was to have a cordial bond with her husband’s ex-partner. Something that can be tricky for Matt Barnes.

As a stepfather to his fiance, Anansa Sims’ three children, he’s had his fair share of challenges. Particularly with Sims’ ex-husband David Patterson. In fact, during a major alteration that occurred during a 49ers-Cowboys playoff game, Barnes even spit on Patterson. However, he claimed that Patterson was the one who caused the things to escalate to such a level. So forget about them having a cordial bond.

After the recent invite to Trump, it’s natural to wonder whether Barnes will be able to have such a meaningful and deep conversation with the former president. And what exactly does he mean when he says “real questions”? It seems there is no option but to wait for the less likely—Donald Trump appearing on All The Smoke—to happen to find out.
