The 2024 Olympic basketball scene got more interesting. With Team USA’s disappointing exit from the FIBA World Cup, superstars across the league like LeBron James have shown their interest in suiting up and taking the gold for America. As Joel Embiid announced his commitment to Team USA, questions started rising about whether this would be the best team that has ever been assembled in the history of basketball, competing with the ‘Dream Team’ and Michael Jordan.
This led to a Washington Wizard legend talking about the formation of the team during his podcast and whether it’s one of the best teams ever. But the segment took a turn as the 3-time all-star stated that the ‘Dream Team’ is not the best team that has ever been assembled.

In the recent episode of Gil’s Arena, the hosts were talking about Team USA for the 2024 Olympics. During the same, Brandon Jennings and Gilbert Arenas mentioned that there are no other teams that have a chance at winning. Brandon Jennings then said that the only real question is if the new Team USA will be better than the 1992 ‘Dream Team’, that consisted of most of the superstars of that time, including a prime Michael Jordan, in the midst of his first three-peat.
To this, Arenas said, “The ’92 team, in my mind, is not the best team ever assembled.“
But that team had Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Karl Malone and Charles Barkley. Yet it was still not enough for Arenas to be convinced that it was the best team ever. Jennings then asked if it was the ‘Redeem Team’ from 2008.
Agent Zero revealed that, in his mind, the best team ever assembled was the 1996 Olympic team. This team did not have Michael Jordan.
Arenas went on to give his reasoning for it. He said that in 1992, nine out of the 12 players were all NBA players the previous year. Even though Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were on the team, they were at the dawn of their careers. But in 1996, all 12 teammates were All-NBA players that season.
Shaquille O’Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon both came off the bench on the Olympic team, while they both averaged 29 ppg in the NBA. This makes it the best team ever assembled for Gilbert Arenas.

LeBron James has shown his interest in playing in the upcoming Olympics.
Kevin Durant has also said that he will play in the Olympics. With Joel Embiid recently committing to the team, it’s looking scary for the competition.
But Gilbert Arenas talked about it weeks ago. He said it’s over for every other team as soon as LeBron James announced his interest in participating in the Paris Olympics. LeBron has certainly created a domino effect which has now fueled other players to join the squad as well.
