“What I mean is, I have five kids by five women. That’s not really the right example to show for my daughters or my sons.” A few months ago, Dwight Howard expressed deep remorse about the example he set for his children. Even though he hasn’t officially retired from the NBA, the former Lakers star is happy being there for his children. One such example was his recent activity with his youngest kid.
“@dwighthoward got David in training 💪🏽💪🏽.” The 3x DPOY re-shared the story of him teaching some drills to his son. David was born to Howard’s ex-girlfriend Melissa Rios in 2013. Rios was a real- estate agent and in 2020, tragically passed away due to an epileptic seizure. Since then, the father-son has grown closer, as the former champion is taking care of David. Being away from the court and showing up for children is now what the former Magic star looking up to.
“I put in so much work, so much time, it’s like now I want to give that time to the kids.” Dwight Howard said on the Gilbert Arenas podcast back in September last year. The 39-year-old stated that he made enough sacrifices during his playing career, and it became imperative to him to spend time with his children. After all, he has missed many such moments previously due to his NBA career.

But now, since the kids are reaching a certain age, missing their small or big events is not conducive anymore for the father of 5. Just last year, he was gathering support from fans for his return to the league. But seems those talks have been watered down as the former champion trains his kids and spends time with them ahead of the potential HOF year.
Previous instances of Dwight Howard colling his NBA return talks
The 6-foot-10 star is known for robust defense, a trait that the Lakers have been missing. After the recent trade where the Purple and Gold star got Luka Doncic in blockbuster trade, fans feel they are a Big away from a championship. The search for a Center also got fast-tracked after the rescinded trade of another center, Mark Williams from the Hornets.

So, the fanbase started searching for the next best option, which also included Dwight Howard. A series of tweets will prove why the former champion is not interested in returning. “Too bad I’m a podcaster now.” Another was, “It ain’t that hard to find a center.” Since he is not keen to return, he suggested other names who fit the profile. “Boogie, Javale, Okafor, kenneth… it’s a lot of options out there don’t mind me I just be trolling 😅.”
Even though he is not focusing on coming back, let’s all remember he has yet to retire officially. Still, he is one of the 17 finalists for the HOF induction. During the Final Four of NCAA men’s basketball, the Naismith Hall of Fame class will be announced. Many believe Dwight Howard will become the first ballot HOFer. Which will become even more motivating for his kids to train and continue the legacy.
