The intersection of NBA and hip-hop culture has long been a breeding ground for both collaboration and conflict. From 4x NBA champion Shaquille O’Neal’s rap career to Jay Z’s brief ownership Stake in the Brooklyn Nets, the two worlds have often collided. Remember when NBA legend Dennis Rodman called out Travis Scott for copying his sneaker design? The 5x champion brought that topic up once again. This time, however, he gave his flowers to the Sicko Mode fame as well.
Dennis Rodman was recently invited as the special guest on the Got Sole podcast. Jonathan Dimodica, who is one of the hosts of the show, asked about his feud with Scott, to which The Worm gave a surprising answer. “No, it was not like I was trying to blast Travis. I knew Travis back when he first started and stuff like that. He’s a hell of a talent, he is great. A lot of people say he’s the biggest in the world. I give him credit. He’s up there with Kanye… Travis is cool, though, to me,” Rodman said during the podcast. But what was the feud about?
Travis Scott had collaborated with Nike’s Jordan brand to create his very own shoe. The sneaker release was the most popular and successful release in the brand’s history thanks to the huge fanbase of Travis. Rodman addressed this on the Get Sole podcast. “If you look at this shoe here (holding a Travis Jordan) and this is funny as hell… somebody can look it up on their phone right now and tell me what copy this shoe looks like,” the 63-year-old said. But which sneaker did the latter claim to copy?

It was the Air Darwin sneakers that he designed in collaboration with Nike. He wore it first during the 1994-1995 season when he was still playing with the San Antonio Spurs. It was also the first shoe that featured a reversed Nike logo and hence Rodman had called out Travis for copying the design back in July. “Come on, Travis, give us some credit. You copied my shoe. So this ain’t new. This ain’t new, brother. But either way, congratulations,” said Rodman.
The Rodman-Scott saga illustrates the complex interplay between sports, music, and fashion in contemporary culture. But did you know that The Worm had collaborated with a lot of shoe brands?
Dennis Rodman and his collaboration with different sneaker brands
Dennis Rodman had always been a trailblazer on and off the court. His unique style and unconventional approach to life made him a cultural icon. One of the areas where Rodman left a lasting mark is the world of sneakers.
Rodman first signed a deal with Reebok when he played with the Detroit Pistons. When he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs, he joined Nike, with whom he launched his first branded shoe, Air Darwin. But after Nike launched the Air Worm N’Destrukt, he broke the deal with the brand and signed a $15 million deal with Converse.

During his Hall of Fame induction in 2011, it was seen that he had again switched to Nike. The Worm’s collaborations with shoe brands have not only helped to solidify his status as a fashion icon but have also contributed to the broader culture of sneaker collecting.
