Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr was in attendance for the New York Yankees vs San Francisco Giants game last night, but is there more to his presence at the game? Notably, Kerr had a rough NBA season with the Warriors, failing to even qualify for the playoffs. So it was most likely that the management would make some changes to the team structure. However, there are rumors that Kerr may not be happy with some of the rumored changes. And this MLB matchup may just be a break from the updates that the media has recently reported.

“Steve Kerr watching Giants vs Yankees,” wrote Alex on X, while sharing a snap from the game. Meanwhile, NBC Sports Bay Area’s GSW reporter, Dalton Johnson, also posted on X, “Steve Kerr is at tonight’s Giants game with Tom Tolbert. Hunter Pence is two seats over.” There is no denying Kerr has a lot on his plate as of now. The 58-year-old is preparing for the Paris Olympics as the US Men’s Basketball coach.

Additionally, GSW is reportedly looking for not just roster changes, but also in Steve Kerr’s coaching staff. There are rumors of the Warriors considering the possibility of including former LA Lakers coach Darvin Ham to their coaching staff. The speculations are based on The Athletic’s Anthony Slater’s report that the Warriors had some conversation with Ham in recent weeks “The Warriors’ desire to add a big-name assistant, and they are in search of either a former head coach or former player to fill the role,” Slater wrote.

In fact, the Warriors may as well make two additions to the coaching staff if, in case, Kenny Atkinson departs. Notably, multiple franchises like the Lakers, Cavaliers, and Bucks are reportedly interested in Atkinson as a head coach. As per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavaliers secured permission to interview Atkinson as one of the top candidates for head coach. So it’s clear GSW is bringing a former head coach or player into the staff, with or without Atkinson’s presence. But the persisting question is, will Kerr be able to run the team with Ham?

Are there differences between Darvin Ham and Steve Kerr?

Ham did not win a championship with the Lakers but led them to the playoffs in both of his seasons as head coach. Apart from this, he was also the assistant coach to the 2021 NBA champion team, the Milwaukee Bucks. So the issue with him, as GSW’s potential assistant coach, does not lie in his merit, but in his exchange of words with Kerr in season 2023.

Though the Lakers defeated the Warriors in the 2023 Conference Semi-finals, Kerr had accused the Lakers of flopping. Notably, during the first 4 games between the two teams, the Lakers attempted 103 free throws while the Warriors were awarded only 48 such shots. After the Game 4 loss, the GSW coach told the reporters, “I thought they took some flops and were rewarded.”

The comments by Steve Kerr did not go down well with the then-Lakers coach. Responding to the allegations during an appearance on ‘#thisleague UNCUT‘ podcast, Ham termed the Warriors’ coach’s comments “lame as hell”. So it’s most likely Kerr may not be entirely supportive of the possibility of Ham landing in the Warriors’ coaching staff. And witnessing the rivals — Yankees and Giants — go against each other seems to be an efficient way of taking his mind off of things.
