Magic Johnson: More impactful as a Dodgers co-owner or a Lakers legend? What's your take?

It’s a big weekend if you’re Magic Johnson. The Commanders are on an upward trajectory, the Dodgers won the NLDS, and it’s Hall of Fame weekend! Some of the greatest stars in basketball have gathered in Massachusetts before Vince Carter headlines the 2024 class inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. Among them is Spencer Haywood, a 2015 inductee. He caught up with his once rookie, Magic, and from the looks of it, it was a meetup for the ages. Magic’s mind was all the way in LA though.

Haywood and his daughter, Zulekha, met Magic and Cookie Johnson at the HoF dinner, which is a tradition before the main event. “HANGING OUT WITH @magicjohnson AND @thecookiej AND MY DAUGHTER ZULEKHA AT THE HOF WEEKEND..” he wrote. But Magic has held back on his own updates from the festivities.

What the Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner didn’t hold back from is hype his team. The Dodgers overcame a narrow setback to beat the Padres 3-2 and win a spot at the NLCS. As Earvin “Magic” Johnson always does, he was on X with a congratulatory message.

“Congratulations to my @dodgers ownership partners, Manager Dave Roberts, and all of our Dodgers players and fans tonight!! We are officially going to the National League Championship Series against the Mets! Two HRs from Kiké Hernandez and Teoscar Hernandez led us to a 2-0 victory and the pitching from all of our pitchers, starting with Yamamoto, was tremendous. All of our relievers also did a great job tonight!

The Dodgers have to beat the New York Mets first next to advance to the World Series and possibly give Magic his championship ring. So you can forgive the lack of HoF updates from the 2002 inductee as he celebrates getting closer to a major milestone.

Showtime Lakers monopolize Magic Johnson from Dodgers

Have an interesting take?

Magic and Cookie were in ‘Blue Heaven’ with fans when Dodgers took Game 1 victory. The Lakers legend hyped his Commanders from a distance at that time. But he missed the Dodgers and Commanders’ winning spree in person to attend the HoF weekend.

Thanks to Spencer Haywood we’re getting some early glimpses on what the 2024 festivities look like. Haywood spent his final NBA seasons with the Lakers when they had drafted Magic out of Michigan. They’d go on to win the 1980 title, Haywood’s first of the Magic-Kareem combination. So this reunion was extra special.

This class is also important to Lakers and Lakers nation. It will be the long overdue induction of Michael “Coop-a-Loop” Cooper into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. Legends like Magic had campaigned for his inclusion and now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will welcome him among the greats.

This dinner tunred into a Showtime Lakers reunion, as Haywood revealed. Cooper, Johnson, and Haywood celebrated Norm Nixon’s birthday (October 11) along with their former teammates.
