Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade’s year nine of their marriage truly tested them. Looking back, Union recently admitted just how difficult that time was. “It was year nine of our marriage and … year nine was very hard,” she confessed on Today with Jenna & Friends. She further explained on the issue which D-Wade revealed earlier this year. “When you mention year nine being hard, he hadn’t revealed his cancer diagnosis and his own cancer journey, so now we can put it in more context,” Gab said.
However, a few weeks ago, CBS shed light on Wade’s health journey, revealing that he had undergone surgery in December 2023. Doctors had diagnosed him with kidney cancer, leading to a procedure that removed 40% of his kidney. Despite the severity of the situation, Wade stayed positive, largely because of his family. But what’s his status now? Union answered that question during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
So, how’s Wade doing now? “Good now,” Union confirmed. And she didn’t just say it—she had proof. “I mean, shirt off, you know, so that’s how you know he’s great. There you go. Lives to be naked, no, he’s, yeah, he’s good and clean bill of health,” she said on the show. Turns out, Wade himself backed up that claim, posting a shirtless photo on his Instagram story recently.

Sure enough, Wade took to Instagram to back up her claims in his own signature style. Posting a shirtless photo on his story, he indirectly let fans know that he’s not just recovering—he’s thriving. For a man who has always embraced confidence and self-expression, this simple act spoke volumes. After a tough year, it’s clear that Wade is back to feeling like himself again, and his fans couldn’t be happier.

In another interview, Union revealed that Wade wasn’t initially open about his healing journey. “He was a little more hesitant to take us on that journey,” she said. But his family’s unwavering support made all the difference. “My smile has never faded!” he even wrote for them.
How did Dwyane Wade find out about the disease?
It all started with what seemed like minor health concerns. On his podcast, Dwyane Wade shared that he had gone in for a routine checkup, mentioning mild stomach discomfort and a weaker urine stream. Nothing alarming—just something worth checking out. But what doctors found was far more serious. A tumor had been growing on his right kidney, completely unnoticed.

Interestingly, Wade wasn’t even thinking about his kidneys. “I didn’t go in for my kidneys,” he admitted. “But because I did the full-body scan, they saw something.”

Since retiring from the NBA in 2019, he hadn’t been keeping up with regular medical exams. But after watching his father undergo surgery, he decided it was time for a full-body checkup. That one decision may have saved his life.
Once doctors detected the tumor, there was no easy way to determine if it was cancerous. A biopsy wasn’t an option, meaning surgery was the only way to get answers. So, on December 18, 2023, Wade underwent the procedure.

“Thank God that I did do the surgery, right?” he said. “Because the tumor was cancerous.” While the operation removed 40% of his kidney, it removed the threat to his health.
Now, with a clean bill of health and his usual confidence on full display, Wade’s already back to posting shirtless pics online. But what’s next for the NBA legend?
