As the NFL season 2024 is approaching, Magic Johnson is taking more active involvement in Washington Commanders. The most recent instance of this was the 5x NBA champ’s lunch meet with the 33-year-old Commanders’ star, Bobby Wagner. Interestingly, as per the former’s recent update, this session extended beyond the discussions regarding football.
In fact, Johnson bestowed his business guidance on Wagner to help him grow his own business when needed. Taking to his official Instagram account, the former LA Lakers star shared the photo of his lunch meeting with the XLVIII Super Bowl champ. “Today I had lunch with Bobby Wagner, a Super Bowl Champion and current Washington Commander linebacker. I was impressed by Bobby’s entrepreneurial mindset and provided him with tips on how to scale his business and building wealth!” read the caption to Johnson’s IG post.

Wagner joined the Commanders this March after his second stint with the Seattle Seahawks. Media reports suggested the reason behind this was Commanders’ head coach Dan Quinn, and linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. Apart from this, yet another reported reason was his MBA from Howard University. The explanation for this could be that Wags will need funds to expand his horizons beyond football.
Notably, Wagner has signed a one-year contract worth up to $8.5 million with $6 million in guaranteed money. And getting guidance from a successful billionaire businessman like Johnson can only be a bonus. However, the 33-year-old linerback is not the first Commanders star to receive off-field guidance from the Lakers legend.

As stated above, after a disastrous performance in season 2023 by the Commanders, the 5x NBA champ has taken even more active involvement in the franchise. So it was obvious for him to meet team’s one of the best performers, Terry McLaurin.
Notably, Commanders (then Redskins) drafted McLaurin into the NFL in 2019, and he has stayed with the franchise since then. Even last season, he earned himself 4 touchdowns and 1002 yards. With this, he became the first player in franchise history to record four straight 1000-yard seasons. Meeting the franchise owner himself in such circumstances would likely have furthered his confidence.
However, the discussions between the two were not limited to the football field and the team. “I took Commanders star receiver Terry McLaurin to lunch today in Los Angeles to talk about the Commanders, life after football, and his entrepreneurial aspirations!” Johnson had written in caption to his IG post. The probability is that there could be more of these one-on-one interactions with the players ahead of the NFL season, starting in August 2024.
