Charles Barkley has always been a larger-than-life figure in basketball, known for his unfiltered commentary and vibrant personality. Paired with sports, he has made a life off of it. However, a recent video shows that if you were to mention San Antonio to Barkley, his thoughts are likely to veer off. What makes San Antonio so unique to Barkley?

‘FanDuel’ YouTube channel shared a video on Saturday featuring Barkley playing a word association game. The rules were simple: say the first thing that comes to mind when given a city name. For Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, and Auburn, he predictably responded with “Football.” But when they mentioned San Antonio, Barkley paused, smiled, and simply said, “great city.”

This moment ties back to a long-running feud Barkley has had with San Antonio, particularly its women. For years, on his ‘Inside the NBA’ show, Barkley has made jokes about San Antonio women, often calling them overweight. While Barkley insists it’s all in jest, many have found his comments offensive.

During an interview with ‘Grant & Danny’ on 106.7 The Fan, Barkley expressed frustration over being asked to stop these jokes, saying, “I mean, they won’t even let me talk about San Antonio anymore when I’m always talking about their big ole women down in San Antonio.”

The tipping point came when a woman wrote an article accusing Barkley of fat-shaming San Antonio women, prompting the producers of ‘Inside the NBA’ to intervene. Barkley explained his side, “I’m like, ‘First of all, I didn’t call anybody personally fat in San Antonio. I was just joking around, and now this one lady wrote this article. … So, y’all gonna let one lady, we’ve been having fun with this for probably 10, 15 years and when we go to San Antonio the people are having a blast with it.’” But Barkley seems to have cut down on the comments since then.

So while San Antonio still proved its lingering memories, having Chuck stop in his tracks, football strangely seemed to be the only other thing on his mind. Or strangely, is it?

Charles Barkely’s connection with football

Charles Barkley supposedly once tried his hand at football. During a chat with NFL legend Shannon Sharpe, Barkley shared a hilarious story about his brief and disastrous foray into the sport. He recalled, “My friends make fun of me. I played football for one day… I said, you (football coach) made a mistake talking me into playing football because… I just ran into a guy full speed for like 2 hours. This is stupidest s**t ever.”

Charles Barkley added that after that grueling first day, he was sore and beaten up in the locker room when the coach approached him about returning the next day. Barkley’s response was, “this is the first day of practice and the coach says, I’ll see y’all tomorrow. I said, wait, we doing this tomorrow? And I said, I’m not doing this tomorrow.”

Interestingly, Barkley also had a shot at hosting a football show. During an appearance on ‘The Jim Brockmire Podcast,’ he revealed that ESPN once approached him to host ‘Monday Night Football.’ Barkley’s reaction was both humorous and honest: “I like football, but I ain’t gonna be one of these jackasses get on TV and act like he know about football.”
