With the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) deal in the making, players around the league are getting paid heavily in contrast to what they were given in the past. The eleventh pick in the 2020 draft showcased potential and promise, but for him to be given the biggest contract in San Antonio Spurs history has definitely brought up questions.

By heavily out-shadowing great players like Michael Jordan, who has not even come close to this kind of contract during his playing career, the league has changed significantly over the years. This new extension makes this 23-year-old part of the elite group of players who signed massive contract extensions from the 2020 draft: Lamelo Ball, Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, Desmond Bane, and the like.

The biggest contract extension in Spurs’ history

The San Antonio Spurs shooting guard, Devin Vassell, signed the biggest deal in the franchise’s history. He signed a 5-year, $146 million extension with the Spurs. This clearly shows that the Spurs have Vassell as one of the key pieces for their future. With Victor Wembenyamma on the team, the team will start winning now, and Vassell is projected to take a leap in production.

In 1996, Jordan signed the biggest deal of his career, which was $30.1 million for one season. This was the largest contract in the NBA at that time. Before that, the most he ever made in a season was less than 4 million dollars.

Devin Vassel’s new contract completely overshadows the contract of the Chicago Bulls legend and is 115.9 million more than MJ’s. Last season, Vassell averaged 15.5 PTS, 3.6 AST, and 3.9 REB. But he was not able to play the whole season as he had a knee injury. Still, Vassell was given a massive contract, which shows that the Spurs believe in the young star.

But now his contract extension has drawn the attention of the fans, as people are happy with many players signing for hundreds of millions. Signing a 5-year, 146 million-dollar contract seems crazy at first glance, but it is nowhere near the top of the list in the current generation.

Michael Jordan never even came close to this kind of money in the NBA

Jordan’s highest-paid season was in 1997 when he made 33 million dollars. But this is nothing compared to what everyone in the league is making currently. Over forty players in the league are making over $30 million in the upcoming season. Recently, Jaylen Brown signed the biggest contract in NBA history. He signed for a 5-year, 304 million-dollar contract extension.

Before that, it was Nikola Jokic who signed a five-year, $264 million contract. There’s no debate that Jokic is a far better player than Brown, but Jokic signed his contract a year ago. An ESPN reporter speculated that the next biggest contract extension of this magnitude will be for Luka Doncic, who can make upwards of 80 million dollars in a single year.
