MJ’s basketball career may have ended, but his financial success continued with ventures like the Jordan Brand. This allowed him to purchase a majority stake in the Hornets in 2010 for around $275 million. On Friday, he officially sold the team for an astounding $3 billion, earning a $2.25 billion profit in just 13 years. His star power and influence undoubtedly played a significant role in the team’s remarkable growth during his ownership.
In a deal first announced in June, the Hornets were reportedly valued at a staggering $3 billion. The team’s journey under the ownership of Michael Jordan began in 2010 when he acquired a controlling stake for $275 million. Notably, the Hornets were the only NBA team with Black-majority ownership during his reign. While Jordan has stepped down as the majority owner, he retains a minority stake in the franchise. Former minority owner Gabe Plotkin, along with Rick Schnall, assumes the mantle of Co-Chairmen of Hornets Sports & Entertainment, with a unique governance arrangement that sees them rotate the governorship every five years, starting with Schnall.
Despite a disappointing 27-55 season, the Hornets are looking to bounce back with the addition of Alabama’s talented prospect, Brandon Miller. They selected him with the second pick in the 2023 NBA Drafts. This acquisition provides hope for the team’s future, as they seek to rebuild and regroup under the guidance of coach Steve Clifford.
With both LaMelo Ball‘s return from ankle issues and the influx of young talents like Miller, the Hornets are eager to reinvigorate their performance on the court and make their presence felt in the competitive landscape of the NBA.
Heartfelt farewell video sparks backlash
The Charlotte Hornets’ ‘Thank you’ video sparked a wave of criticism despite the financial improvements realized during Jordan’s ownership. Jordan himself narrated the video, highlighting his influence on the franchise and relationships with the public by using sound snippets from numerous occasions over the years.
Fans, however, expressed their dissatisfaction, calling the years Jordan owned the team “forgettable,” and criticizing the caption’s word choice.
The tribute video was posted on social media, and the caption read, “Thank you, Michael Jordan, for 13 memorable years“.
While the video was a tribute to a legendary figure in basketball, some agitated fans didn’t seem to like the message behind the tribute. One fan raised a question in the comments section, and asked, “Thank you for what? we were a** when he bought the team and still [are] 13 years later ??“
Another fan wrote, “Memorable for the worst 13 years this franchise has ever had ?“

One disappointed fan wrote, “Might have been the worst 13-year stretch by a team in literally sports history.”
A neutral fan, while appreciating his on-court genius, took a subtle jibe at his ownership tenure. He said, “Arguably the ? and the worst owner in the league. Goodbye, Jordan?“
